Short term disability

Hi all, I'm having my tummy tuck and breast lift in January and I get CIGNA short term disability through my employer. I plan on taking four weeks off and using my vacation time for the first two weeks. Has anyone had problems getting short term disability for plastics?

No.  I'm on 8 weeks of CIGNA short term disability.  Of course, it started with my hernia/panni surgery, but then it was plastics (thighs and lower back) a week later and I had no problem extending it from 4 to 8 weeks.

Well I was all ready to take all my paid time off 4.5 weeks and add a couple weeks of Short term and I was just informed that that's double dipping and you can't do that. Not sure who's rule it is (Liberty Mutual) but they say that I cannot combine the 2. They will allow me to take 1 week of my time to that there's no dowm time in pay.

I am VERY frustrated... Short term is only 60 percent of my pay!!!

My HR person will be contacting me tomorrow, one day before surgery to clear it all up. I was going through our secretary at work because we did not have a HR person until Friday!!

I have a physical job and am going to need 6-8 off.

I read that many have been that insurance companies will use the "self inflicted " clause in order to not pay out. It's possible that I was going to get dinged anyway.

I'll let you know how it all turns out. Good luck to you.

Insurance covered the Panni part of my LBL, so my HR rep approved me for 4 weeks of STD.  That paid me 60% of my normal paycheck, and I had the option of supplementing the other 40% with my paid time off.  I had been saving my hours anyways incase the STD wasn't approved, so I opted to use some of it to supplement.  My bills unfortunately don't pay themselves!

I was wondering if it mattered whether or not the surgery was a medical necessity. I am paying for my tummy tuck and breast lift out of my own pocket. I'm hoping I'll be able to get the two weeks of STD. If not, I'll be okay since I have money saved. I'll have plenty of vacation hours by the date of surgery but I don't want to have to use them all. If it comes down to it, I'll get unpaid for two weeks.
