In my case , after 9 surgeries for many different things I found that this last surgery

caused forgetfulness and brain fog, I seriously don't feel I came out of general with all my full memory. idk if that can happen .

now I need plastics and im so afraid of going under again.

One of the many reasons I chose Dr Sauceda in Monterrey Mexico is because he uses an epidural. I have malignant hyperthermia and general anesthesia could kill me if I am exposed to certain agents or they are in the equipment used for a prior surgery. I couldn't take that chance. Also with MH I can't have surgery in outpatient centers and most PS is done outpatient. Sauceda keeps you in the hospital setting for a few days with 24/7 nursing care.

Thank you for asking this question. I have wondered about it often enough. Thanks also to Dr. L for your answer.  It sure is helpful to have different views explained by both patients and doctors.

I had no problems with the epidural, didn't wake up during the 11hr surgery or during the face lift.  I came awake quickly and was able to talk to my family after surgery.  Pain was handled well.  Dr Sauceda did an amazing job.  I wanted it all done at once and one recovery period.

Dr. L thank you for your post. I have always had severe nausea from anesthesia with.the exception of one surgery for a rupture of the bicep tendon distally. I had a lengthy consult before surgery with the anesthesiologist. He said he would administer a similar anti nausea med. that is given to chemotherapy patients. Post op I was amazed at how great I felt. My surgeries have always been a secondary concern to me. I hope to be able to speak with the anesthesiologist well in advance to ease these concerns. Thanks again for the information.

The biggest deficiency in pain control and a nice smooth anesthesia is lack of preparation.

Youa re wise in insisting on a meaningful pre-surgery consult.  Thgis is key, and avoids a "cookbook" approach. This is especially important for patients with special concerns.

Happy healing !

Does anyone know of Drs in Wisconsin or surrounding areas that do surgeries this way?
