just got my levels checked and I'm low on the iron end!!! I'm not due for PS til DEC and I feel like I have a chance to get that up so I don't have to reschedule!!!! Ive been taking my vitamins faithfully and was advised to double up. I was just wondering what type of iron everyone takes as I'm worried the brand I'm taking might just not be working for me..and I need a refresher on the vitamin rules.. I'm taking my  my calcium in the am and my multi, b12 and the iron at night maybe I need to switch it up? also is it true that maybe I should give up coffee because it lowers my iron? HELP!!!!!

I have been anemic since puberty, and was severely anemic for a bit post op... I always take my iron at bed, per my dr, and away from everything else. I take Vitalady's tender iron. It doesn't constipate me and it brought my numbers up quickly when my prescription iron in higher and higher doses was failing. Coffee and tea (caffiene in general) do inhibit iron absorption, so make sure to stop drinking it at least six hours before you take your iron, as that is how long it takes to exit your system..

Also, make sure your multi doesn't have calcium snuck in there- mine has a full serving, so definitely can't be taken with iron.. And the one thing you should always take WITH iron is vitamin C.. Either in your iron (as mine is) or in a complementary pill, or even just take it with a drink of low sugar OJ..

Hi,

If your overall Iron is low.  The Poly0Iron 150 sold by Vitalady will help.  http://www.vitalady.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&k ey=1340X100 ,  For a real boost to your iron stores use the HEME Iron on vitalady's site. http://www.vitalady.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&k ey=1320X090 Take one at bedtime away from everything else with vitamin C and a copper pill for maxuimum absorption.

The tender Iron as mentioned above will also boost your Ferratin but not as quickly as the HEME.

HTH

Good luck!!

I'm one of the weirdos that heme iron didn't work for.  Go figure!

My iron and related labs were a smidge low before plastics.  Then during plastics I ended up needing to units of blood and another unit a day later.  After surgery my iron continued to go down hill and I felt like crap.  I ended up with an iron infusion and felt much better.  I go in a week or so for more labs to see if I need another infusion.

My advice (having been there, done that) would be to look into an infusion now, before surgery.  If you can't get that done, I'd work HARD to get your levels up before surgery and I'd get them checked a few weeks before.  If they're not well within normal (not the low end of normal), then I'd postpone surgery until they are.  You want to avoid blood transfusions if possible and not need 3 of them like I did.

Good luck!
