What do I need to remember--surgery a week out

Looking for advice about what you needed or found helpful for the hospital and early out days. I'm planning on pre-making some meals for the family, but assume I won't have much of an appetite, so plan ready-to-drink shakes and light protein snacks. Speaking of RTD shakes--any favorites? I never used them.

Okay, help me get organized! I feel like I'm in nesting mode. My poor kids won't have any toys left by the time I'm done!!!

Thanks,

Denise

I'm so indecisive and confused. I have a consult with lickstein on Thursday . Then a couple more at the local residency clinicas (university of md and johns hopkins). I'll decide after that. It's so confusing and hard to know who to pick. I. Driving myself crazy. Lol

I'm not any help with the RTD shakes. I buy the whey isolate tubs of powder and mix my own concoction.

As far as things you might use post-op. I had flushable wipes, stool softeners, laxatives and benedryl on hand. I had a lot of gauze bandages and paper tape. I even used maxi pads as bandages. They felt good and really protected my incisions....also neosporin. I had a shower stool so I didn't have to stand for those first few showers. I didn't have much of an appetite either right at first. You can also try egg drop soup, cottage cheese, or ricotta chesse fulff. It's ricotta cheese mixed with SF pudding and some milk. All of those have good protein. Just something soft and easy to eat without making a meal.

Good luck to you!

Ooh, medical supplies. Totally forgot. I do have some 4x4's from a friend's surgery, but need the paper tape (super sensitive to the other tapes). I read of some cutting maxi pads to use around the drains--forgot that too!

Thanks for the reminders!!

The only piece of advise I wish that had been imparted on me was to take care of the hair on my "lady business".  My doc shaved down the first few inches in my pubic hair where the drain comes out and I got terrible razor burn because I am super sensitive. It still itches and I'm 9 days out.   I would have had it waxed it I'd known.

I brought (and wore) a few long flowy skirts - it was easier to hide the drain.  Just strapped it to my leg with a bra strap.

I dislike all protein with the exception of unflavored Syntrac Nectar powder so a brought some and mix in into my drinks.  I also supplemented with vitamin c and bromelain.

Good luck!!!

I was just today reading my book about plastic surgery and it said NOT to shave because it could open the skin to infect. Huh? I couldn't believe it. I was totally going to shave and still may--gonna ask my surgeon. I'm super sensitive too and that would drive me nuts if they did it (and I can totally see them dry shaving against the grain--ouch!)

Thanks so much!

I would not have risked shaving prior to surgery. The nurse used an electric razon on me so it did not give me razor burn. Also, I got unscented maxipads at the dollor store and saved a bunch of money that way. I used them instead of bandages all the way around my incision. Lots cheaper.

I like Atkins RTD shakes or Slim Fast low carb shakes. I drank a lot of them post-op. I did not feel like chewing and my muscles were pulled so tight eating food hurt for a while.

Laura, how did you get the maxi pads to stay on the incision?
