noticing the differences in surgeon recommendations

I didn't want to hijack another thread with this thought...

I've just been reading through several peoples posts about their recovery instructions and there is SUCH a difference between some of the ways the surgeons handle things.

These are the biggest ones that stick out in my mind that are really different...

My surgeon said I didn't need to waste money on some 'special' post surgical compression garment. He puts on the same big (12"w 36" l) Velcro wrap that I had after my RNY. He said to just wear this for a few weeks and then switch to some high-waisted spanx.

Same for the bra. I had a post surgical bra on at the hospital, and switched to a normal bra . He gave me a pic of a Bali as an example of what type to wear for recovery - wide sides, no underwire, good support. I just am using some old ones I used to sleep in.

He let me shower at day 3. He says all his stitch work is under the skin and nothing is exposed except healing skin - so there is no need to keep the area totally dry.

No Steri-Strips or any gauze is covering anything. He prefers them to air-dry. Only thing I am supposed to do is to put regular lotion over the scars after I shower (daily).

He doesn't recommend creams like Mederma (sp?), but knows patients use it - so says if I insist on using that type of product, to wait 6-8 weeks.

He also doesn't suggest the use of any other supplements, other than the ones I already take for absorption.

The parts that are the same are no lifting anything heavier than my water bottle, lots of rest, no exercising for a few weeks, etc.

Not trying to say anyone is right or wrong (cause I wouldn't know), just noting the differences in their recovery recommendations...

Yup......lots of different recommendations and yet we still all end up with generally the same end result, right?

My surgeon provides a compression garment to be worn pretty much 24/7 in the beginning.  The last time I saw him he told me to wear it when I'm really active, but that I don't need to sleep in it anymore....this was around 6 weeks post-op maybe?  (I can't really remember.)

I had no restrictions on showering, either.

I had paper tape on my incisions that he removed around 3 weeks post-op and then nothing.

Mine also doesn't recommend any creams or silicone sheets or anything.

He also doesn't suggest the use of other supplements.  I did have to stop my vitamin E prior to and immediately after surgery.

I was told no lifting over 10 pounds for 6 weeks and no driving more than 3 hours at a time (I do this for work sometimes).

That is something I have noticed also!

I was placed in my garment (a full one, not a binder) before I woke up from surgery. I was supposed to wear it 24/7 the first week. He doesn't let people shower with the drains in, hence the week straight. I was supposed to wear it except for showering for an additional 3 weeks.. I switched on my own to a more comfy garment though.

The day of surgery I was catheterized and wasn't allowed out of bed at all- my hospital bed was even locked in a specific position! I was told to be up and walking only to go to the bathroom for the first 5-7 days.

I was told no supplements... But I took arnica anyway...

Lots of differences, but since none of the differences seem to cause harm, I just go with it! Lol

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

I too noticed that...lots of different directions from doctors. I suppose we are each a unique case and most don't share the same Dr. I hear that every plastic surgeon has their own techniques so as longs as we're following what we've been instructed to do by them I suppose we're all on the right track. And in the end we're all enjoying our new "hotness!"
