I don't have an appetite...

I have totally lost my appetie for any thing except some form of liquid...This is sooooo unlike me..!
I know that I was told, that right after surgery, I may not have an appetite, but that didn't happen, but yesterday, I did not want to eat a thing...I thought it might have been because I was tired from the long drive to my surgeons office and back home...Well, today, I feel on top of the world, but I try to eat, because I know I need to, but I just do not have any desire for food of any kind...I'm a little puzzeled and concerned, for I know I need to eat to keep the healing process going, well...Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how long did it last..?

Thanks Everyone for your advice and support..!

Hi there! Probably pretty normal. I'm sure the veterans here will come along and advise.

But listen...you know the drill!

We need good nourishment and hydration to heal. And you needs a few carbs for energy. Your body is working hard to heal itself.

So, hit those protein drinks if you need to in order to get your numbers up.
(easier said than done...I loathe those things!)
If not drinks...maybe a bar that you like.

Now is not the time to scrimp. Sneak some fat in there too for good (ahem) colon health.

Eating has often been perfunctory for me. I look at my numbers in Sparkpeople and come up with a plan to get the protein in...tablespoon of peanut butter here, a boiled egg there...but you gotta do it. The planning helps me.

You are doing so well. Take care!!

Cyndy - I absolutely went through the same thing!!  Had all the "right" things in the house to eat afterwards but nothing sounded good and nothing tasted good.  I've heard this is very, very common.  My wake-up call was when I stepped on the scale and saw how much lower I was after deducting what the surgeon said was removed.  So I literally made myself down a protein shake, eat some peanut butter, etc. on schedule, every so many hours.  Mini meals and that way I didn't feel nauseous, etc.

Take care!

Cyndy,
I can relate! I just hope I can continue to be uninterested , cause prior to surgery due to stress about having surgery, I was emotionally eating. But the other day, my mother was here with me for a week. And there were certain times I wanted to eat as she was beginning to drive me a bit nutttttts!

Right now I too am purposing to focus on that Protien . But I find, when I have been doing more running around, it takes great effort to eat. I hope it hangs around for quite some time!

I still have days like this and I am 4 months out - I just have protein coffee, protein shakes and water all day long.  Protein is protein so it's all good!!!!

I lost my appetite for about 5 weeks. (It did come back).  It was difficult the first week because I was in so much pain and dependent on others that I wanted the "old comfort food" that I had back in my morbidly obese days.  I just told myself I couldn't go there - I had come too far and by body needed nutrition to heal.

I had protein hot lattes, protein shakes, smoothies with protein powder, protein ice cream, protein powde in greek yogurt.  I got 130gm protein in a day.  I did lose some weight but my emphasis was on getting in fluids, protein and sleep.

Now at 8 weeks out I'm fighting with wanting to eat again and wanting bread - why bread? I don't know, but if I eat white flour I will regret it and just want more.

Just had a protein shake with frozen fruit and Powdered super greens powder.  It is 100 degrees here and humid - just didn't want food - too hot.   I will eat some greek yogurt with fresh berries & Fiber One on top before bed.  Should get me to my 130 gm protein today.

Best wishes.  Eat healthy.

I'm 3 weeks out today and have to make myself eat. I eat something high protein every 3-4 hours. My surgeon wants me to have 90-100 grams of protein a day for optimum healing. I paid too much damn money to screw anything up, so I comply. And it's working. Yesterday at my follow-up appointment, he said I'm healing ahead of schedule. Yay!!

2 1/2 months later I am just now getting my appetite back.  I've lost around 18.5 lbs since surgery.  I went for my consult yesterday for my second stage (8/26), he fussed at me for losing weight.........funny, huh?  Just try to eat and make sure it's nutritious.  I did find that the fruity protein shakes helped but really had to encourage myself to put forth the effort to fix them!
