Verizon Iphone 4 Usage in Mexico

Can anyone please tell me your experiences with using  the VERIZON Iphone 4 in Mexico?

If I have an UNLIMITED data plan in the States, but understand this will not cover me in Mexico.
I am not willing to pay .99 cents per minute to use my phone down there, and am open to any suggestions that are more cost effective.

If I get a data plan to use in Mexico, does anyone know how one goes about using Skype from my phone?

I would love any feedback on this subject, as I have talked to 2 different Verizon reps and get a different story from both of them.

Any and al IPhone tips would be greatly appreciated.

I used Skype on my netbook, and tried not to use my sprint phone at $1.69/min for very few calls, $.50 for texts.

Tom, Levittown_Loser, used a skype app for his IPhone.  He'd connect using the clinic or hotel's wifi and use his phone through the wifi.  I loaded $10.00 on my skype account and still have a few dollars left.  I used my netbook to talk to my daughter on skype on her laptop, and called my mom through skype from my netbook to her home phone or cell phone.
