Hi all!  Finishing up day 9 and the swelling has begun.  So, I'm glad I kinda looked at everything a few days after surgery - ha!

Any advice to help with the swelling would be appreciated.  I still have two drains and one will be with me for a while it seems.  My PS does not do the garments afterwards so I don't have that to use.  Thanks!

Without the garments, i guess you have  the old stand byes of drink EXTRA water, low or no-sodium diet, make sure to keep the BMs happening, walk for at least 10 minutes every 30 minutes, eat a balanced diet, avoid water pills, avoid caffeine.

You may want to buy yourself a compression Garment.  It sounds like we had surgery close to the same time.  My LBL was on June 14th.  I gained 10 pounds because of the swelling in the first week, and then started wearing the compression garment and have lost those 10 pounds plus 10 more.  I have 5 more pounds of swelling to lose before the scale shows my correct weight My pre-op weight minus the 16 pounds of skin the surgery removed).

Here is a link to the compression Garment my surgeon gave me to wear.   This first one is 24/7 for 6 weeks http://designveronique.com/cgi-bin/ic/dv2/853.html   Then on Week 7 I am supposed to switch to this one and wear it 24/7 for 2-4 months  http://designveronique.com/cgi-bin/ic/dv2/1650.html  This one is harder to get into since the sides are sewn shut.  The are pricey btu I think you would like the feel and see faster healing.

To wear the thing with the drains, you thread the drains through the crotch hole, and then through the leg hole in your panties and pants.  Also be sure to move the drain tubes to a differnt spot on your leg so that it doesn't make your leg sore.

RNY 10/14/08 LBL 6/14/11    135 pounds lost, after bounceback regain.  And I am OK with that.  It enabled me to have double hip double knee replacements in the 9 month periond between Oct 2011 and June 2012.

If her surgeon is Joe Capella, he does not use compression garments and he doesn't want his patients to use them.  Plus his incision is raised and the compression garments would bother them.

I had my LBL with him and a revision just 9 days ago.  I never needed the garments.  I controlled swelling with diet and exercise.

Please share your diet and exercise tips to control swelling because I seem to swell more when I exercise.

I have a new philosophy, I'm only going to dread one day at a time.  Charlie Brown

Are you post op plastic surgery?  If so, how far out?

I am only 10 days post my revised surgeries (lower body, inner things, and arms) so my exercise is limited to walking until Monday. My walks vary from 1-3 miles in length and I try to go out at least 3 times a day (20-60 minutes) depending on the heat.  I am not supposed to sweat too much along the incisions as I have the dissolvable stitches.  Monday I can start cardio again.

I track my food online using livestong but you can use any site that allows you to view sodium counts for meals as well as daily.  I try to keep all my meals and snacks well below 500mg of sodium and aim for no more than 2000mg in a day - usually much lower.  I follow Andrew Weil's anti-inflammatory diet. http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02012/anti-inflammatory-diet.  When I follow the diet I don't swell.

On day 8 my parents came to town and I ate a high sodium meal (grilled cheese with fries) and swelled like crazy.
