I used it before plastics also.  Walmart brand Docusate Sodium - 2 in am and 2 in pm.

In hospital, for TT and arm lift they brought me stool softner with narcotics.  I appreciated that.  I also find a hot protein latte ( 2T Benefiber added in) for breakfast helps bring on a BM.

Best wishes.

i took colace.  100 mg with each dose of pain meds.  even if you come off the meds I would still reccommend using a stool softener for a bit, you dont want to strain with newly tightened abdominal muscles.  I also added a capful of miralax to each shake i made and had 1-2 protein shakes/day.

Ok, so I didn't have a LBL or TT but I agree with the other girls.  You will want to take a stool softener while on narcotics, and for a little while when healing so that you don't strain for a bowel movement.  Colace is the brand name for ducosate sodium (so you can buy store brand ducosate sodium anywhere).  It's cheap and it works quite well.  We give it to all of the post-ops in the hospital.

I was told to purchase Colace and also was told to increase my fiber daily after surgery - either a fiber bar, fiber supplement, etc.

I took my stool softener starting like the day before my 1st round of plastics and I took it with my pain pills.  I never had any real constipation.

OMG I forgot during my 2nd round and it was horrible.
