Traveling for surgery?
Definitely worth it! Went to Mexicali October 2010 for an extended tt and arm lift. My cost for those two procedures was approximately $6000. I was at a top notch accredited hospital for 3 nights and spent 4 nights at a really nice hotel........all included in the price as well as compression garments, etc. My only out of pocket was $169 airfare to San Diego for a round trip ticket, and about $20 at the pharmacy after leaving the hospital for antibiotics.
I found the surgeon on line by asking questions just like you are doing now. I had been on several forums and blogs. The surgeon I picked is board certified in BOTH the US and Mexico, has 22+ years experience and is quite conservative. He had an excellent record among all former patients I could find and though I tried hard and looked, I could not find any negatives. I found him to be very cautious, compassionate and thorough.
The consults include sending photos electronically to his office for review, then he gives his written opinion, then a consult is done in person when you arrive/day before surgery. Since I was there for one week, follow was done by either him or his nurse if it was just bandage changes.
The price made it well worth my time, and I plan to return to the same surgeon in the fall for further procedures along with another family member having a few procedures. There are 3 plastic surgeons in his particular group, and while all are more than qualified, he was the most experienced and I feel 100% confident and comfortable sticking with him. The physicians are Dr Manjarrez, Dr Gaspar and Dr Luque......Dani (nursiegirl) just used him in the last few days and is quite happy with her results.
There are many people on here who have used Dr Sauceda and he too is an excellent surgeon with an outstanding reputation. His prices are a bit higher and he uses twilight sedation and does multiple procedures at once. Just a matter of preference really.
If I could have matched prices or even found something close to comparable near my home, I would have, but every place I consulted with came up to around $14,000 and that was simply unaffordable to me, so I did my research and went another route and am very happy with my decision and would recommend my surgeon wholeheartedly.
PM me if you want further information.
Good Luck to you!
Jean

I personally used Manjarrez and will use him again this fall for a breast lift and a family member is getting a face lift and tt. I was originally scheduled to have Luque, but he had a family emergency at the very last minute and I was offered Dr Manjarrez. Either surgeon would have been fine with me, but I was really pleased with Manjarrez.
Hi there! I'm the Danielle she was talking about. I had my surgery with Dr. Juan Luque in Mexicali, MX on Friday. I always knew that plastic surgery wouldn't be an option for me in the U.S., but managed to get a good deal here. I definitely recommend travel tourism! There are some wonderful surgeons here in Mexico, and they do a lot of work with patients from out of the country, especialy the United States and Canada, because of the cost difference. It is a little harder to do research on Mexican surgeons, and consult with them, and travelling can be pretty inconvenient. However, I consulted with a plastic surgeon in California who wouldn't even consider trying to get insurance coverage for my breast lift. I was told multiple times that a breast lift would not be covered, and that there wouldn't be enough tissue removed for it to qualify as a reduction. I was quoted anywhere from $9,000 to $12,000 just for a standard breast-lift in the United States, and that would never be an option for me.
I started researching through a medical tourism agency first, and was planning to use Dr. Manjarrez because of GreenbayGirl's great experience! I was able to haggle a little and get that price down to $6200 for a breast lift and Brazlian butt-lift, but that did not include the hotel or travel arrangements, and it was still a lot of money for me. Then I got in touch with another friend who lives in Mexicali (WasaBubbleButt), and she went straight to Dr. Luque who is her friend and asked him for a flat price. He said he would do both procedures for $5,000. I decided to go ahead, and sent photographs to him to look at, scheduled my surgery, and before I knew it, here I am!
I arrived on Thursday afternoon and was picked up at the Imperial airport by the driver Alejandro (included). He brought me to my friend's house where I've been staying. She offered her home to me to save me the cost of a hotel and food. So kind of her! If I didn't have that contact, there are hotels and food close to the hospital and physician office, but living and food expenses would have cost an extra $100 or so daily. On Friday morning, I went to the hospital and had labs drawn and an EKG. I finally met the surgeon and had a long and detailed consultation. He took a lot of time with me. Dr. Luque really listened to what I wanted, and made sure that I was comfortable and happy. He has an excellent bedside manner.
I had surgery at about two pm on Friday, and it was done under twilight anesthesia (so no problems from general!) and I was given a spinal block, which means I had very little pain at all. The surgery took much longer than expected and I was taken to recovery at about seven, and stayed there until midnight when I was able to feel my legs enough to move to the other bed and be transported to my room. Dr. Luque came to see me the next morning and that afternoon to discharge me. I will see him again for a follow-up tomorrow., and again at least once to have the sutures removed before I go home I am very happy with the surgeon himself, but there are some problems with the office staff, who are disorganized and flaky. Still, he is shaking things up and changing some of the staff to work on those issues, which is great. I am thrilled with my experience and the results so far!
The price break was more than worth it!
