Early Planning for PS in Mexico
Sooooooo I had RNY in 2005 and have kept off a little over 160 lbs since I lost it. I really am ready for some plastics. I never thought throughout this whole journey that I would ever be considering to have plastics outside of the US but since I do not have insurance coverage, this is my only affordable way to go. I really just started thinking about it hard this morning, as I would plan on using my income tax refund to cover the costs. I have TONS of questions. How do you handle all of the negative input from friends/family when they flat out say 'it's dangerous!' ?? Also is there a website that has reviews of all the doctors outside of the US?? How do you make the decision who is the best surgeon for you? I really want a tummy tuck and arm lift, but depending on costs would love to have lower body lift. Again, I am in the very early stages so am very uneducated on the PS. Any reference would help me...I guess I may just have to deal with the fact that not everyone is going to be behind me on this and they will always have their own opinions.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

I wanted a surgeon who knew what to do after losing 222lbs. He knows exactly how to handle it, and many OH members have gone to him.
He'll be in New York City the beginning of July if you want a supper and a consult with him. Or you can email him photos and he can give you a quote.
Good luck in your decision.

Plastics, July 2010 with Dr. Sauceda in Monterrey, Mexico
Hello,
Many of us face this issue, and the best thing you can do is LOTS of research. You can also google the whole subject on line which will bring up US shows that have profiled this....for example 20/20 or 60 minutes, etc Look up "medical tourism" on google and go from there. It will explain the credentials, quality of care and safety of going outside the US. It will also help to explain the system used to accredit hospitals, both here in the US, as well as the standards used by the WHO (world health organization) Now, having all that information, the best information you can gather will be word of mouth on this type of forum. Weigh everything out with your best gut feeling, follow up with a phone call or email to people you find credible to ask further questions. We have all been in this situation before and most everyone will be very helpful. Check the government website for recommendations to the particular area you are going. Use common sense also......just because there is a gang problem in New York City or Chicago, doesn't mean that the whole country is dangerous.....same for Mexico.
As for selecting a particular surgeon, there are MANY good plastic surgeons in both Mexico, Costa Rica, etc. Some are more popular or well known, but that doesn't equate better. Dr Sauceda has an excellent reputation, but there are other top notch docs out there. Most have 800 numbers, call and gather information. When you talk to a co-coordinator or office person that is "very helpful and nice" always make sure you understand what they can and cannot do for you if you have a problem or something goes wrong. Often, they are a person you talk to here in the states or in Mexico, but they don't have actual access to the physician.
Get EVERYTHING in writing, preferably in contract form. Ask about deposits and refunds should you change your mind.
I personally used Dr Manjarrez, who has 22+ years experience, and is board certified in BOTH the US and Mexico, and was very pleased with the experience. There are always a few glitches, so make sure you know who to call, and what they can do should you need them. I had an extended tummy tuck with lipo and an arm lift. I stayed 3 nights in the hospital and 4 in a luxury hotel.
Prices vary widely from each and every surgeon, although like Dr Sauceda, many of them have prices posted on line. Again, make sure you understand what IS and IS NOT covered.......compression garments, meds once you leave the hospital/clinic, ALL hospital and physician services, etc. You don't want to be surprised with a bill upon leaving. If possible, ask for an "all-inclusive" price and nail it down with deposit and contract. Is also a good idea to make sure you have someone local that can step in once you get home if necessary, that can be a problem for some.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else. P M me any time, and good luck with your decision.
