Having Second Thoughts after Reading About Mickie's Death!

I certainly don't want to be "Debbie Downer" here, but has the recent death of one of our OH community made anyone else second-guess their decision to have plastic surgery?  I've been reading about complications/death after plastic surgery since yesterday and my upcoming procedure, the lower body lift/tummy tuck, has the highest risk of complications.  I don't want to belittle what Mickie's family and friends must be going through right now by turning the attention to my own surgery, but it certainly has made me very hesitant!!

It didi make me a little nervous at first, but I said a little prayer and hoping that everything goes ok.

Hello..

I understand how you are feeling...I have had my moment of the same reaction.

The thing that gets me about her surgery, is WHY her surgical team ALLOWED her blood to get sooo low...I don't know anything about her surgical team, but here, in every surgery I have ever had, there has always been a blood supply within reach "if" the case should arise that you should need it..It does happen sometimes...I lost a lot of blood when I had a C-section. Blood was there without wait.

I have my consult next Wednesday, and this will be something that I discuss with my surgeon.
And Yes, the lower body lift is the most extensive and complicated surgery, by all that i have read, but YOU should NOT be losing TOO much blood WITHOUT a supply ready for use if needed.

I don't understand how her surgical team allowed this to happen..!! It is just Terrible..I feel so awful for her and her family...(and angry, as well..!) This should NOT have happened..!!

There may have been no fault on her surgical teams part at all.  It is very possible her body, with cardiac arrest from what I have read on here, went into shock.  There are several types of shock, but shock is basically defined as plumetting blood pressure unresponsive to fluid resuscitation.  I am sure when her BP began to drop they hung several units of blood as well as fluids/volume expandeders such as NS/crystalloids.   Mickie's body however did not respond; when the body goes into shock it is a very perilous situation.

Mickie's death was a devestating eye opener; I think many of us, myself included, view complications of these surgeries as statistics, but now it is a real person; someone we all 'knew'.  Everyone here should know that just because there is blood on standby and an excellent surgical site/team does not guarantee anything.

Hey Christene..

It was my understanding she lost too much blood..and that is why she went into cardiac arrest...I could be wrong in understanding that statement..But I do agree with a Lot of what you said..I just hate that it happened.

Thank you for your response..it's a lot to deal with for many of us...and I can only imagine what her family is going through...God Bless Them..!!

I agree, i felt so sick when I read about what had happened to her.  Her family must be heart broken.  To think after surviving obesity, major bariatric surgery and other elective procedures- something like this happens.  What should have been a fairly routine and elective procedure ended so horribly.

I will be thinking of her family and praying they are able to get through this incredibly difficult time.

I think that a great tribute to Mickie would be to second and then third and fourth guess any elective surgery.

We should be well informed -- not afraid to ask questions and self-advocates.

I think that it would be wonderful for you to speak candidly with your surgeon about what happened to our sweet acquaintance, and ask what precautions he takes to ensure your safety.

You are considering major surgery --- please have second thoughts.
Work with your surgical team to have your questions answered,  your fears calmed -- and if you do not get a sense of peace about it -- postpone.

I know that sometimes you could bleed out and the surgery team not know. But someone in that surgery room should have been watching her bp at all times. Our blood vessel are enlarge when we gain weight so we are at and higher risk for bleed outs in surgery you must always ask how many units of prbc's on hold. Make sure your dr knowns your blood type and like always get your blood work done before surgery.

I thought about it also, cause i m having more surgery next month.
I am not a super religious person, but I believe in God & destiny  and it was her time to go and when I have surgery I put my life in Gods hands & if it is my turn then so be it, it can happen anywhere. when we r born it is written when our time is up.
30 yearsago I had a near  death experience but it wasnt my time & I am still here. What a tragic thing to happen to Mickie and I feel for her familhy

I am too very saddened by a loss of a sister....I guess it all depends on how you feel going in. I was afraid to not wake up...this was my only fear.

I chose to go to a large hospital where I figured I could get the best emergency care possible. I figured if I was gonna do such a drastic thing I was going to go where I could be sure they were going to have my best interest at heart...not my wallet.

I just finished mine and do not regret having it. I am just happy I had a skilled team of doctors and nurses to make sure I was ok above all.

Blessings to all especially Mickies Family. <3
