I have used them in over 400 patients, and we call all of our patients at home the first 5 to 10 days and ask about their pain scores on a 1 to 10 scale.  Almost all are in the 3 -4 range right after surgery.

I learned a few tricks with On-Q and other similiar systems, like starting it way before the patient wakes up and also directly injecting the areas instead of relying on the catheter to soak them.1

If you break the initial awareness and perception of pain when the individual wakes up, you can positively affect the entire recovery process.  We work from the beginning of surgery to strictly avoid cold, shivering, or disoriented patient whose first perception is pain upon awakening.

Also found that refilling the pumps on day 2 or 3 didnt add a lot of benefit.

Almost all patients who have the system use less narcotics, have less constipation, sleep cycle disruption and other narcotic-related issues.

I had the Q pump and it was awesome.I expected to have so much more pain but didnt.I would reccomend it.Like the other post said it was already put in when I woke up and it automatically works for 3 days.I took mine out myself at home when it was empty and even that did not hurt.(I could have gone in and had him do it but he said it was up to me) It is a great thing!!!
