Hello All,

I am almost a year out and i have lost 119 lbs.  My biggest problem area with skin is my legs and thighs and butt.... I have so much skin in these areas that I am getting really bad rashes and open sores.  I have seen my doctor about this and have had to have creams given to me by her for this.  I have a past history with getting a staff infection when I get open cuts so I am worried about this.  Has anyone had their insurance cover this kind of procedure, I am not even sure if I am far enough out to even start thinking about this but it really is  a problem.  It is very painful and itches very bad.  I have about 18 more lbs to get to my doctors goal weight so i know that will not be a problem.  I do workout up to 6 times a week and see no help in my skin at all.  Any advice would be great!!   Thanks.

Hey there, congrats on the huge weight loss!  I've not had the problem you are experiencing so the only advice I can really go as far as getting insurance approval is to have your doctor document each rash/sore both in writing in your chart and with pictures, also the various meds prescribed, duration of treatment, etc.  If your doctor does not tell you to use a specific wash for the skin then just use mild soap and water to keep it clean before applying topical agents.  You may want to meet with a plastic surgeon now rather than waiting until you reach goal, a consultation won't hurt and (s)he will be able to best advise you how to proceed.  Good luck!

You need to check your personal insurance policy. Some insurances will not pay for any reconstructive surgery, others might pay if you had cancer while others will pay if you document problems such as yours.
