Keep in mind you can deduct medical and dental expenses to the extent that the exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. It's not just your surgery, it's also mileage, dental bills, other doctor bills that are not related to the surgery, lab work, etc.

thanks for the link, so I read it but not real clear. If i my insurance paid some, and i am making payments on the rest, can i count that or only what ive paid so far? thanks for the help.

I had TWO rounds of plastics as reconstructive, medically necessary procedures.
I claimed BOTH rounds - one in 2008, the other in 2009. I actually did an amended for the '08 when I filed in '09 when I realized I hadn't included the expense.
