I was wondering if I have plastic surgery, will I lose some of my hair again? I've been losing it after the DS surgery. Just wondering about this. Does this normally only happen if I have general anesthesia? Does this mean if I have twilight sedation I won't lose my hair? Anyone know about this?
Aloha FFBS -
I did lose hair after my VSG - 1/3 at least, started about 4 months post op, continued til about 8 months post op, and when it grew back in, the texture was very frizzy and coarse. I assumed it was because of the anesthetic/surgery/metabolic shock to my body ( it's called telogen effluvium) , as the same thing happened after each pregnancy ( and at about 4 months post delivery). I had been getting all my protein in from about 3 weeks post op, and also followed my vitamin regimen- still lost a ton of hair.
Plastic surgery was almost a year ago- I had been at goal for about 10 months, and I upped my protein from about 90 g/day to over 125 g/day about 3 weeks prior to plastics, then continued that level of intake til about 9 months post plastics ( I work out alot and weight train). I did not lose ANY hair, despite this being a much longer anesthetic procedure and no doubt harder on my body. I had started a new hair care product about 2 months prior to plastics- I heard about it on a radio ad and purchased some (though it's not my nature to try something based on an advertisement alone). I strongly feel my excellent hair retention was because of this product - not because of any scientific data but anecdotally- my hair is much thicker, and feels softer. I have posted about it before- it's called Ovation Cell Hair Therapy, the introductory kit starts you off with shampoo, protein treatment, and creme rinse- lasted me about 2.5-3 months, and I refill the protein treatment bottle less often since I don't use it daily ( more like 2-3 X weekly).

Be well, no I'm not a paid spokesperson ( but I would be if they asked, HA!) Good luck- XOLori

Lori, I wanted to tell you that I purchased the Ovation product based on your recommendation and also started using it about 6 weeks prior to my plastics. Not only did I not lose any hair like I did with wls, but I am normally a heavy shedder (nothing to do with VSG) and it has all but stopped. I really like this product and although it took a while, my shedding finally subsided. I use it every time I wash my hair which is every other day. Thanks for the recommendation.

Aloha Laura- good to hear you are healing well, and that your hair is in good shape! I swear I feel like a con man telling people about this product when I have to scientific proof to back it up but dang if it didn't work for me! It's good to have someone else tell me it worked for them as well! Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see if we'll have an opportunity to meet in person sometime, we cross each other on the posting board so often! XOXOLori
