Cicacare Silicone gel scar sheets??

Anybody use cicacare silicone gel scar treatment?  My PS has prescribed it - and it is VERY expensive here in Canada.  He prescribed 4 sheets, with 2 refills.  When I called the pharmacy to order it today - it was $82 for one sheet (4"x4").  Eek!!

It is unsure whether my medical insurance will cover this.  They want to do an estimate - 4-6 weeks.  My PS wants me to start asap (I'm 2 months out).  I ordered one sheet - and I'm going to submit it and take my chances so that I can get started right away.

From looking on their website, it says I can rewash and use it from 14-28 days.  So that gives me up to a month to figure out if it is paid for or figure out something else!!

A couple of questions for you knowledgable people!!
1) where do you get your gel sheets?  A cheap supplier?  My MIL lives in MN, and I could get them delivered to her and have her mail them to me if need be.
2) do you need a prescription to order them in the US?
3) how do you know when they are done?  14-28 days is a BIG range...how do I know it is "used up"?
4) did they work?  worth the huge money?

Thanks everyone!!

I found mine on makemeheal.com.  I read reviews to get a sense of which may work best. If I can figure out what brand I bought, I will come back and post it. They were very expensive there as well.  The ones that I bought for my breast lift worked very well. They were a lollipop shape just for breast lift and thet stayed in place well.  The breast scars are truly minimal and I do think the silicone sheets helped.

An Rx wasn't required.  I do wonder if it would have been covered by insurance of a script had been written for me and I went through the pharmacy.

I bought a huge sheet for my arms and cut it into strips to use on my brachioplasty scars.  I could not get them to stay in place for any period of time.  My arm scars are fairly raised and still a bit pink.  I'm planning to go with regular application of silicone gel to see if that will help.

To me used up is when they won't stick anymore.

Hmmm..... a huge sheet sounds good!! ;0)  The one they are selling me for $82 is pretty darned small!!

My dr. did say to use a 3M tape (I think it was called Micropore) overtop of the arm sheets to keep it in place.  Did you use something over it?  It does mention that on the Cicacare website as well...so I'm going to try that.  I didn't really think they were adhesive because of that tape he told me to use...especially since you need to wash them?  Hmm....

You might want to try those strips again with the tape to see if it helps.

My PS was adament that I use Cicacare brand.  So I'm going to stick with that brand for now.  Hopefully it will be covered.

I loved LOVED L-O-V-E-D my cicacare for previous surgeries, and the stuff works! My insurance covered it for a knee issue, because without it I would likely have wound up unable to bend that knee due to scar tissue behind it. Mine was cut into 2 2x3 inch pieces, and I rotated them, one each day.

when I showered, I rinsed the one I'd been using off and hung it up to dry for the next day.

2 years later, when I had my RNY, I used those same sheets on the larger scars from that, and it worked well there too. With any of them, if they don't stick well, it's because skin oil is blocking the silicon. Again, rinse gently, hang dry, and they should be fine again soon. All the silicon does (per the PT who first got them for me as well as my surgeon) is to keep the scar moist enough to heal and flatten properly.

My surgeon has been using a different brand which he says gives the same or better results, and if I allow before and regular after pics for the company's ads, I get it free.

I'm going that route.

Great to know.

How long did the pieces last?

Knee surgery was in 2006, and I still have them.  As far as I can tell, they're pretty much indestructible.

I have personally used and recommend to all my patients that are having scar issues Mepiform sillicone sheets. I would have never believed it until I used it on a surgical scar of my own. It costs about $15 per sheet. They can be cut into strips and and worn up to 23h per day. You can wash them as they are non-stick and use for about 2 weeks. You can go onto google shopping and by them by the sheet. No presciption needed. Good luck.

Hi Erica,
I did use the Cicacare strips on my arms but honestly didn't find them to make much of a difference.  They were very hard to keep in place with all the movement from my arms and with your clothing sticking to them it made it awkward.  They are quite expensive but not covered by health plans unless it's being treated for burn victims (is what I was told by ManuLife).
I fortunately work for a health care company and one of my contacts gave me a nice supply of them.  I'm glad I got them for free since I'm not sure I would have wanted to spend the money on it.  I also used a different brand from J&J that another friend gave me and again didn't really find it made much of a difference.  You can tell once they are done, they kinda get all shrivelled up and no longer stay on.
Hope you feeling well.
