anti depressants????
Hi, this is my first time posting on this board. I had lap band in May and am maybe half way point of my weight loss. I have alot of questions about PS procedures, cost, recovery ect.. but for now I am just going through old posts to get my answer since I have a while still before pursuing PS. But I do have a question. Can you be on anti depressants when you have your surgery? Here is why I ask. I dont think I am depressed, maybe mildly at most. But I am finding myself very moody. I know in general my whole life I have dealt with this, but I dont like who I am when get this way. I think I am at the point where I should see someone about this, and I would assume they would prescribe some sort of medication, I am assuming anti depressant. I dont want to go thru making appointments, starting a medication and working till I find the right dosage ect just to taken off them when I get my surgery. I know it takes a while for the meds to work in the first place. Any way I have never taken them before and wondering if I should put this off until later or should I get the ball rolling and see someone now. I guess in my best case senario I would want maybe get PS in maybe 6 months, but maybe longer, depending on how fast I can realistically get the rest of my weight off.
Thanks, Jennifer
Thanks, Jennifer
I have suffered from clinically what is called "Major Depression" most of my life. I have been on anti-depressents for 17 years. I currently take a combination of two SSRI medications and I took them throughout my WLS, recovery, as well as plastic surgery.
Go get yourself talking to someone. That is key to successful weightloss anyway, it can only help.
Best of luck to you in your journey!

Jennifer,
I am not a medical professional so I can only tell you about my experience. I have had many surgeries and antidepressants were never a factor. So if you think you would benefit from the medication then by all means see someone and get started. In fact I would think the sooner you get started the better. Sometimes one has to try different medications to find the one that works for them so you would be giving yourself time to not only find the right medication but to also get stable and enjoy the full benefit of the medication.
Not just plastic surgery but any surgery is pretty stressful -- not just on the body but on the psyche as well. The anesthesia and trauma can play havoc with one's emotions. Being stable on the meds could help you tremendously during that time.
Good luck and keep us in the loop about how you are doing. Also as you think about PS please do not hesitate to ask questions here and let us know how we can help.

Yes, you can take them through your surgery. Discuss with your surgeon preop and they'll make sure you get them while you're in the hospital and you can have when you go home.
I'm an RN and this is very normal for people to be on while in the hospital (during weight loss surgery, plastic surgery, and many other surgeries).
