I'm torn about staying or going home! Advice!
The LBL is Friday, December 10th. It is estimated to be a 6-hour procedure but my ps encourages patients to go home the same day to force movement such as getting in and out of the car, etc. to minimize blood clot risk.
However, my sweet mama (and myself somewhat) want me to stay in the hospital overnight ($500 extra)...what did you do and which WOULD you do? The ride home would be about 20-25 minutes.

Be happy.
I haven't had any plastics yet but will be having my arms done on December 22nd then my breasts a few weeks later. My surgeon says I MUST stay at a hotel near the clinic the night of both these procedures - they gave me the names of three places where patients typically stay - and if there were complications overnight it would be easy to get medical attention. For my bigger surgery - tummy tuck - the cost of one night in the hospital is included in the total fee.
Perhaps your mom and you would be okay with staying at a hotel near the hospital - just in case - and it will surely save you a ton of money. You could still comply with his request that you move around a bit but still ease your mind that you are near a medical facility overnight.
Good luck on your decision making and al the best with your surgery and recovery :)

Mickie has a good idea, I second that.
My surgeon had a deal that I could stay overnight for $300 extra. The next day I still didn't feel up to the 2 hour ride home, but the additional charge for another night was in the thousands so I endured the car ride. It was tough!
I didn't get much rest with the nurses constantly taking my vitals all night long, but the good side was I was on a morphine drip while I was there. The bad side is that I like to quit breathing when I'm on morphine so I was constantly setting off the alarm and then getting woken up to breathe. Sheesh can't a girl take a break now and then?

Personally I would stay at the hospital. I had some issues w/ pain and nausea after my LBL. They kept me overnight (that was the plan even before the issues) and ended up staying 2 nights. The next day when they made me get out of bed I passed out. I don't know how old your mom is or what her background is but that may be a little much to put on her your first night after a long procedure. My mom is a registered nurse and has been for 40+ years. She worked in the OR and Emergency room for years and would not have wanted to be at home by herself w/ me after that major of a surgery. It surprises me that your surgeon doesn't require a nights stay at the hospital. To me even staying at a hotel that is close would be risky. If something did go wrong it could still be a while before you could get medical attention. I prefer to have it a button push away and for them to be monitoring me every few hours.
I would definately stay the overnight. I just returned from a tt and arm lift, and was thrilled to have 3 nights in the hospital and 4 in a hotel. That first night is tough even with the pain meds, so having someone to help with the bathroom, etc just made my rest so much better. Knowing I could reach over and buzz the nurse was so much added comfort.

I just had a LBL, hernia repair and arm lift - a 6 hour procedure and I am so thankful that my insurance paid for 2 days post-op stay in the hospital. It took me quite awhile to get over that doppy feeling from the anesthesia. I had the intermittent pressure booties on me all the time (in bed and sitting in a chair) and professionals to help me get up and moving at first post-op. I was up almost every hour the second night going to the bathroom getting rid of all those fluids that were pumped into me during the operation. I was glad that I had a RN to help me all night instead of relying on my poor DH who would have needed some sleep. By the time I came home I was in a much better shape and ready to be home.
If I were you, I would stay for two days.

I had only on 11/11 and I could not imagine not staying in hospital. My surgery was 5 hrs and when I woke up in recovery I was still drowsy. In fact I was drowsy the first day.I kinda wish I would have stayed another day, just to wake up. I actually haven't had any pain because I went home with a on Q painpump.
