I hate Mexico, and it's dangerous, so I won't even entertain the thought of going there.

So, I was curious if anyone here had recommendations for Brazillian hospitals, surgery centers, doctors?

For what?    WLS?  Plastics?

And Mexico is really no more dangerous then many other countries where medical tourism is high.  As you well know ... it's just important to get and follow recommendations of those who have gone before you!!!

Um, well I am in the plastic sugery forum...

It will be a while before I get plastics, but I hadn't seen much talk about going to Brazil for them. I wondered if the cost of travel would cut out any savings you get from going out of country.

I just got 2 quotes from plastic surgeons in Brazil, they were higher than what I was quoted here in the US!  Go figure, plus it'd be a very LONG plane ride and expense!  Maybe I didn't check the right places tho!

There are several that are very good in Costa Rica, and usually cheaper than Brazil. A good place to read about surgeons abroad and see examples of their work is PSjourneys.com

Larissa,

It would be very nice if you would stop slandering all of the medical professionals in an entire country just because you chose to go to the one we all told you had a lousy reputation.  There are plenty of good doctors and safe places in Mexico...just as there are in any country.  Except for your insistence on presenting your experience as the fault of someone other that yourself, you present as a well-informed, intelligent woman.  But this constant bull**** about how bad Mexico is--given that YOU are the one who chose to go to the worst surgeon in Tijuana even when advised not to go there--reflects more negatively on you than it does on Mexican doctors.

And check into Costa Rica...www.cosmetic-cr.com/  Many satisfied patients including medical professionals.

Whoa whoa whoa, I said "I" hate Mexico, and I'm scared to death of the daily reports of death and destruction by Mexican drug lords (I live in Texas, and it is in the news constantly as we are bordering the violence). Totally my opinion and feelings. Never said the doctors were bad, I said I don't like the idea of traveling to that country.

And don't you think I learned my lesson? I will never ever ever go to a physician without a 100 recommendations and vetted through this site and others. Why do you think I asked here? Thanks for the recommendations on Costa Rica, though, I will check it out!

Wow.  Just wow

So you are STILL smearing all Mexican surgeons, because you went to a surgeon you were repeatedly and vociferously warned to not use.  How ethical of you.  Oh yeah -- that fit your NEWS stories and website better than slandering just one surgeon.

http://www.hersom.com/blogs/blog5.php

You quite predictably got in medical trouble, and having made NO backup plans for paying for possible complications, you start begging for money, for publicity, for free medical services -- open a website with a donation button and the whole nine yards.  Got yourself on the news to slander all Mexican surgeons too.

Guilted a surgeon into providing you with free services (of course, while PROMOTING him on your website and in your news stories -- so I guess he got something out of it too), but still ran up thousands of dollars in medical bills, which presumably you are still paying off.

And yet here you are, looking for another foreign surgeon to make you pretty, when you're still recovering from -- and haven't paid for -- your previous surgeries.

So, how long before you pay off your EXISTING medical bills?  Any thought given to paying back the kind people who donated money to you to save your life, before you spend more money on making yourself pretty?

You are quite the piece of work.  With a hefty dose of chutzpah on top.

Please see my reply above you, and re-read my post, and see I slandered no Mexican doctors. I said I don't like Mexico, the country. What does that have to do with the doctors being competant or not?

I understand your guys frustrations. I look forward to the day I can ask for help without being jumped upon...

Edit - I missed the paying part. Heck, this is down the road - I have a very good job now, I'm getting married next year, and will see my income triple in 2-3 years. I was just thinking out loud for the future. And I *am* paying Dr. Provost, albeit slowly.

As someone who had a significant amount of debt a few years ago and who has gone through WLS and plastics, with insurance paying 100% of WLS but absolutely nothing for plastics.  And who has had a stable well paying jobs for the past 18 years...

WLS and Plastics are two emotionally different surgeries.  Generally with WLS, you're in it for health reasons.  With plastics it is 99% cosmetic/vanity.  With so much of it riding on cosmetic, the emotions are quite different.

If you are going to be self pay, then 1) you want to make sure you are financially stable - i.e., debt free.  And a clear plan of how to pay off any debt from plastics.  2) emotionally stable - are you or will you be in the right frame of mind to accept all the changes that are going to happen once you wake up from plastics?  Your body is different and if you don't work through body image issues now, you'll struggle even more afterwards.  Therapy was recommeneded to me before plastics, and found it extremely helpful.

As far as my debt/job.... DH & I were debt free a year before I did plastics.  My job for the past 8 years has been stable and well paying, however, I don't bank the future on what it is now.  Which is why having a plan and a bit of a savings put aside helped.

Sort yourself out first, then worry about plastics.
