Hey Judi,

I am back 16 days from extended TT w/lipo and breast lift in Mexicali.  I plan on using Dr. Manjarrez next year for more work.  Even this early out I can honestly say.....YOWZAH!

As with others, not using a local doc did create concern if post surgical complications should arise.  BUT, the same complications can just as easily arise in the States.

I prepared myself ahead of surgery by exercising, vitamins and upping my protein and resigned myself to using the ER if problems should arise that I couldn't take care of.

Have you looked at the Plastic Surgery Journeys website.  There seems to be a lot of info on Dr. Quiroz.  Some good, some not.  Make sure that you feel comfortable with whoever you go with.

Take care, Nancy

Please send me your email, I have a lot of pictures, and I can direct you to Sharis/Gracies pictures over on PS Journeys.

Robin B. was the other person whose work by Dr. Quiroz was bad. I see her comments have been deleted, but she had everything redone by Dr. Sauceda and was happy.

Hi Judi, I also had surgery in Mexico but with Dr. Sauceda. http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/Dr_Sauceda_Patients/discuss ion/
Not sure if you have seen this group there is a lot of good info on it concerning Mexico.  It was definitely the most cost effective for me for everything I wanted done.  I knew I could not handle several surgeries with my wacky low blood pressure so I opted for one long procedure using twilight.  Dr. S is a very caring man, he handles your follow up care and you see him daily along with the nurse after your released from the clinic and at the hotel.  You can read some of the complications that arose and how he handled them.  "Bonnie" flew back from Canada and he took care of everything for her.  I followed the forums and his group for about 8 months and went back and read all the way back on his message board.  Remember there is no recourse in Mexico, they do not take insurance and you cannot sue a doctor in Mexico, so you really really need to pick wisely.  Most of the negative things I heard about Cosmed was more than 6 months ago, but I don't follow it as much now.  How is their security?  With everything going on in Mexico you must be aware how everything is handled.  Have you registered with the consulate?  They will keep you updated on safety issues.
Would I do it again, yes not just because of the money issue, but honestly I can't imagine being sent home to fend for myself after surgery here in the states.  The after care there was wonderful they did everything for me, helping with showers, garments, and bandages etc.  No way could I have done that at home in the beginning.

Several things to think about re. Mexico (or Central/South America for that matter) for cosmetic surgery aside from any issue of quality of results (which I think can be quite good from patient testimonials)

1) the country is absolutely not safe (per the US state Department) to travel right now the narco civil war going on. The reports on what's going on there is scary. 5 Americans killed last week in Juarez. A mass grave of 19 Mexicans discovered in Acapulco (!) the week before. Monterrey, one of the destinations people discuss here frequently, was not spared by this violence as noted earlier this year on the AP wire, "The U.S. Consulate in Monterrey issued the warning Wednesday, hours after assailants kidnapped several people from two downtown hotels in that city during an early-morning attack. Officials repeated an earlier warning to American citizens to avoid driving between Reynosa and Monterrey amid the increase in violence and reports of impromptu checkpoints operated by drug cartel thugs".

If that doesn't give you pause to travel there for an elective surgical procedure, I don't know what will. Unless you're traveling with a armed security detail, any guarantee of safety is illusionary

2) traveling long distances shortly after these large body contouring procedures is inadvisable. This is less of an issue with facelift, mastopexy surgery, or smaller arm lift procedures however as you're more mobile earlier. It's a BIG deal after abdominoplasty, thigh lifts, and body lift procedures.

3) many complications in the weight loss group can present weeks out from surgery (seromas, abscess, wound breakdown, blood clots), long after you're back stateside. Again, this is more of an issue with the larger body contouring cases. As noted above, you may find it difficult to find physicians to assume your care stateside with adverse events.

4) your health insurance may not cover the cost of treating complications that arise from procedures out of the country.

5) there are a # of people here on OH who, while happy with their surgery,  are describing issues with some of the brokers for arranging these procedures.

6) the cost travel for follow up may ultimately negate the up front savings on these procedures. I find it hard to believe in this economy that patients' paying cash can't find a qualified surgeon here in the US to do some of these procedures competitively priced  (within 15-20% of #'s I see posted here)

Besides the significant cost savings of having cosmetic surgery in Mexico, it can actually be a quite beautiful place to travel to. Like any place in the world, you have to be smart about how and when you travel. Fortunately CosMed Clinic helps you every step of the way, from crossing the border in a private shuttle to arranging for your hotel stay at a safe, nearby location, should you decide to spend your recovery time in Mexico.

But don't just take our word for it, please visit these recent blog posts written by some of our past patients who have traveled from United States and Canada to have their surgery in Mexico.
