Weight loss before plastics

Please indulge me and my questions. My weight has been pretty steady for about a year, but I feel like I would rather go into plastics weighing at least 10 pounds less. I'm focusing on protein and avoiding a lot of sugar and carbs and have lost a few lbs. in the past few weeksl I'm really tempted to do a two week liquid protein diet leading up to my surgery.  I want as much fat gone as possible before my skin is tightened. My doctor does not recommend radical dieting before the surgery, but i did it before WLS to shrink the lver, so I don;t feel it would hurt in this situation..  He thinks I'll gain it right back. Anyone else making a last ditch effort to get to a lower weight before plastics?  I weighed 171 today and if I could get down to about 160 before plastics, i would probably be in the 150s after my swelling abates. I want to be a  pretty safe distance from 200+ lbs. weighing in the 170s is too close to 200 for comfort. Any thoughts?

For the purpose of shrinking your liver is one thing.  For a few more lbs is another.

Radical diets generally do not cause you to lose fat as it does water and muscle mass.

If your ps is advising against it, I would go with his advice.

Surgeons normally prefer for us to be at a "stable" weight for several months. A weight that we don't have a problem maintaining. If you do a radical diet and lose more weight your weight isn't really going to be a stable weight. I agree with your surgeon in that the weight will most likely just come back as soon as you go back to your normal eating schedule.

I wouldn't do it.  You really need a strong nutritional base going into these big surguries.  They take a huge toll on your body.  WLS is nothing compared to say a lower body lift.  It takes weeks and weeks to heal and get the swelling down.  Good nutrition is key.

Nutritional needs leading up to wls and nutritional needs leading up to plastics are two totally different things. Plastics are usually a much bigger surgery with greater healing needs than wls. You don't want to compromise your healing by going too radical before plastics. Listen to your surgeon.

I had the same plan as you.  I was 10lb to goal (and still am) before surgery.  I wanted so bad to lose that 10lb just to say I had reached goal BEFORE plastics.  I tried the 5 day pouch test, lost 5lb and as soon as I started eating regular healthy foods, the 5lb came back that day!  That's when I realized that maybe I'm not supposed to lose that 10lb.  And, I haven't exercised or dieted hard core to maintain what I have now.  So, I feel as if I'm at that point of goal.  I chose to do plastics 1 yr from VSG b/c I was so close to goal and b/c if I didn't do it now, I'd never be able to financially later on (new expenses coming up next year).  I had my plastics almost 3 months ago.  I still haven't exercised (with three small kids and working full time with a husband who works 7 days a week, extremely hard) and I haven't been eating the best, I still somehow maintain what I've been at for the past 5-6 months.

I'm in the same boat fighting with 10 lbs!  But I agree with daisymae, in that, it may be that despite what we want the goal number to be, our body may just be telling us that this is our ideal weight.  I have been going back and forth with this internal struggle and I have my first PS consult next week.  As others have noted, a stable weight which is easily maintained, may be what is right for our body and we may just have to accept that.  Acceptance is just not one of my strong suits!

Thanks for all of your replies.  So, I guess it's a NO on the liquid diet. My weight has been very stable, my eating habits comfortable and not too restrictive and this is where I seem to have settled. I'm still carrying around more fat than I would like, but I honestly am satisfied with my body size. I'm wearing sizes 12-14 and when I was a size 26-28, I never thought I'd look "normal" again.I have to remember how far I've come.
I will up my protein as recommended and i have a bad latte habit I need to break sometime soon. I think doing those two things will be enough preparation for surgery.
