Plastics in Mexico.Whats your take on this one?
This far out from my second surgery and I'm dealing with a seroma in my thigh. Given the fact that I travel for work and my ps has been fantastic about opening his office for me on weekends to treat me, the last thing I want to worry about is working a trip to another country into my schedule to treat me.
I've had very few issues come up but knowing that it's easy to see my surgeon is a huge plus. While I was off of work, it was a 30 minute trip to his office. Now that I'm back working again, I know that he'll see me either at the end of the day on Fridays (after his surgeries) or on Saturdays.
For me, part of my choice in surgeons included one that would allow me to do my recovery at home, rather in a hotel. I spend enough time in hotels and on planes.

it is wonderful for people that feel comfortable to go to MX for PS. I have had several PS in the past 2 years without any complications,
well this time my wound dehissed on my inner thigh, which means it split open. sometimes these things happen a complication of plastics well I am sure glad my PS is only 10 miles away cause I went back to see him every 2 days for the first 3 weeks , he wanted to keep a chck on it and make sure there was no infection cause I am diabetic if I went to MX for PS I would still be there after 6 weeks my wound is the size of a only a quarter now I go back to see my Dr every 2 weeks until it closes
I wish u luck

I think everyone understands the concept that for the most part, these docs are 'great' . The issue isnt so much safety with the surgeon, its the aftercare that is needed. I know money is the main issue that people want to go out of the country, but the bottom line is that everyone needs to consider the follow up care if they have complications. I cannot imagine getting on a plane and flying back and forth. Can you imagine if you have an open wound, infection or some other complication having to deal with the whole airport/transfer/flight ordeal? And what if its serious, and you cant fly? I am a nurse, and very aware of what is out there, what can happen and the increase risk for infections to occur.
The resident programs here in the US will save you money. Lots of money. They are incredible, safe and have incredible follow up care. Please keep that open as an option for anyone considering going out of the country. I think the fact that its a resident program scares people, for obvious reasons. Patients done realize this, but when you have surgery in any teaching hospital, you are most likely being operated on by a resident with the attending assisting. When you have PS at a residency program, you ALWAYS have a board certified attending that is standing there at the table with them. They are not going to let anything happen to you. I had a face lift, anchor tummy tuck, breast augmentation and breast lift and have the absolute most incredible results....the attendings that were at my surgeries were the best in the city of Boston. I did my research prior to each surgery on both the resident and the attendings. I got to meet all of them face to face. Multiple times. And when complications arose (altho mild) post operatively, they were a phone call away and I got seen immediately. I was able to get into my car, drive to the office and they were able to see the problem.
My insurance also paid for my tummy tuck, and they were very clear that if I had problems post operatively and went out of the country, I was on my own. When making my decision on what was the safest for me it was very clear. The nice thing about this too is that the resident that did all of my surgeries is now in private practice, so if and when I have to have some tweaking done, he wont be very far.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
