Hospital & Home Questions

My surgery is coming next week (anchor TT).  I was wondering what sorts of things I should pack for the hospital, especially clothes.

Also, does anyone have any advice about things I should do at home before I go to the hospital to make my return easier?

Any advice you could give about what to expect and how to prepare for the hospital an the return home would be greatly appreciated.

Wear baggy clothes to the hospital - and then wear them home.  Once you get there and start the intake process, you'll change into a gown and be in one until you're discharged.

For shoes - if you have slip on shoes/slippers (mule style) take those or flip flops.  You're not going to want to bend to put on regular shoes.  During your stay, you'll have the slipper socks on.

I didn't worry about make up or other toiletries other than a tooth brush.  You'll want to take toothpaste too.  The stuff they give you in the hospital isn't the best.

As far as things to occupy my time - I took a book but didn't read it.  Either I was napping or had people coming in and out of the room so the tv was just fine.  I did take my iPod for the second surgery to listen to while I was in the holding pen to block out the pts around me and for a distraction.

You'll want to take chap stick or some kind of lip balm.  Also a note book and pen/pencil.  Other than that, there wasn't much to take to the hospital.

At home, put things you frequently use on the contertops.  Drinking glasses, coffee mug, a couple dinner plates, etc.  You won't be able to bend or reach high.

Wherever you plan on doing your recovery, have it set up before you leave for the hospital.  I had my recliner made up with a sheet and pillow.  A blanket was handy too.  I had a nightstand with a lamp, mints, etc anything I would need at a quick reach without having to ask DH to get them for me.

I also had a power strip so I could have my laptop and cell phone charger plugged in.

Oh, and a camera.  It helped me a lot to take pictures of my incisions daily so I could see progress and if I needed to send a picture to my ps, I could.

That's all I can think of right now.

Ditto to what Lisa said. And, the baggier the clothes, the better. There can be some swelling after surgery that can make your regular clothes tighter and uncomfortable. Best wishes-

Loose clothes are a good idea. Slip on shoes too. I recommend lots of pillows for the ride home. I would ask for a pain RX before so you can get it filled to have waiting at home. I used nothing I took with me except big safety pins or diaper pins that I used to pin my drain lines to my clothes.
