Looking for some insight
I have noticed several posts about going out of the country for plastic can those who have tell me why they made this choice? Is the cost really that much different? Did you research local surgeons first and their cost? What plan is in place if you have a complication? Thanks in advance for any replies.
I had consultations here in Indiana and they are only willing to do one or two procedures at once. I have several areas that need to be addressed. In Mexico I can have multiple procedures done and not have to have multiple surgeries and recovery times. I am limited in how much time I can take from work and how much money I have to spend.
Money is not the only reason that I have chosen to go to Mexico for surgery. I have been following Dr. Sauceda's patients on this board and his message board for over a year now and I feel confident in his abilities. I am very familiar with the types of procedures that he can do, I have seen pictures of his work, I have heard from his patients about his abilities, and I know how much experience he has working with weight loss patients. I have more confidence in this surgeon than the ones I have consulted with in person.
I have discussed this with my PC and she is fine with my decision. If there are any complications when I get back home she will address them or refer me to someone who can and my insurance will cover any complications that may occur. I think it is vital to have a PC who is on board with you going out of the country for surgery. Even if you do not have complications you may return with drains or stitches that need removal.
Here is a link to Dr. Sauceda's message board if you want to read more from those who have already had their surgery. http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/Dr_Sauceda_Patients/

I would check with your insurance company, but they should cover any complications. If you went to the dentist and had work done that they did not cover and than developed an infection they would cover that, or another example would be if you got a tattoo or piercing and developed an infection. Just call your claims department and ask them a "what if" question.
Some of the hospitals and plastic surgeons in this country have what amounts to complication insurance. It is not something the consumer can buy, so when you go for consults it is something you can ask about. As to cost you might want to look into one of the ps resident training programs. I know that the University of Chicago has one and there may be others in your state. Let me know if you would like more information.
