one thing I wish I had done
This is the EXACT response post I would give, and I've had plenty of plastics. Suppositories, pain meds 1/2 dose in shorter intervals, MAGIC! And don't wait more than 2-3 days for those suppositories if no bowel movement. The longer you wait, the harder (pun intended) the time.

Aloha HM-
Bummer, such a bummer. The booklet from our PS says to start a stool softener 3 days pre op. They recommend DSS 200 mg once daily ( dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate - available at any drug store OTC in 100 mg caps that are very small). Taken orally, i takes 1-3 days for DSS to work - if given as an enema it can work in 20-30 mins. MiraLax (polyethylene glycol 3350) is another osmotic stool softening laxative that takes several days to work. Neither is helpful if you are dehydrated.
I went through my bout with constipation 6 mos post VSG and will never go through it again--- it was so painful and I simply can't imagine the discomfort of trying to strain immediately post LBL.
Everyone on this forum- if your PS does not hand out a pre operative booklet telling you things like this, ask them to include it.
There are many different types of laxatives, some work by bulking up or lubricating the stool, some by osmotically softening it, some by irritating the colon, some by activating the seratonin recpetors in the gut, and some are dangerous in certain cir****tances.
But if started ahead of time, you probably wouldn't have had a problem- such a shame, and totally avoidable. TELL YOUR PS TO INCLUDE THIS in their pre op packet!
Hope you are feeling better- XOLori
