one thing I wish I had done

I wish I had taken a stool softener and laxative with each pain pill. Life would be so much better if I had. I am doing it know and hoping I do not have to go thru the pain and torture I did this week. Thats been the hardest part. Pooping while on pain meds is not easy. I wish I had been told to do this  without fail. No way will I not take them together now.

Suzy, I'm glad to hear your doing well.  You should try probiotics.  You can get the at the health food store in the refridgerator section.  Take 1, 30 min before you eat.  I'm telling you they will work in a matter of minutes. LOL :D Lou

I had such a traumatic experience with my LBL/BL that's so grossly TMI I won't even explain.  When I had my revision/Bleph last week, I took a laxative a day and a half before, then made sure those stool softeners were the first pill to go down.

I wish docs would just advise everyone to do that with narc pain meds.  Everyone's recovery would be so much easier.

Terri, I'm confused on this:  I took a laxative a day and a half before

Wouldn't that clear you out too soon, or is that the idea?  Miralax works on me in about 8 hrs.  Thanks for you help.  -Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I just took a Colace tablet two nights before my surgery.  Get what's in there moved out - not in an "enematic" way - just a thorough BM.  That way, your colon is not full when you start taking the narcotics.  They are drying and immobilizing. You don't rid yourself of what's in there; then you're adding more on top of that to keep your protein up--and most protein-rich food contains little or no fiber, with the exception of legumes--and the next thing you know, PAIN!!!!!  (STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TMI:  That's what happened to me on my first surgery.  I was miserable and required manual disimpaction two days after a circumferential body lift and major breast lift.)  I can't wish that on anyone.

Terri, thanks for your help on this.  I am planning on following your lead when the time comes.
So you just took the stool softeners 2 nights before surgery.  I could do that.  My stools are normally soft (except when I am on pain killers and it then is the total opposite!)  sooo.. taking the Colace 2 nights in advance would probably give me diarrhea for 2 days, but I guess it would be a necessary evil.  I sure don't want the killer constipation after my anchor TT.  Is manual dis-impaction something you have to go to the ER for?  Pleasant, huh?  I have almost been to that point where none of the remedies were working at home.  Ugh.  Thanx, Jenny

I thank God for OH and advice on things like this... I have seen many people say this sort of thing over the last year, so when I had my TT and BL last week, I made sure to take stool softeners right away. I still didn't go til like day 4 or something, but when I did, it wasn't a horrible experience. Hope you feel better soon!

OMG I will remember it for next time.  This recovery has been the PITS and harder then even I expected and I expected the worse, but the constipation I suffered...

RNY on 04/27/04 with
I swallowed each of my pills with a small glass of prune juice. And while it was hard...I sipped on my water all day.

And most importantly HAVE GLYCERIN SUPPOSITORIES AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. They are easily inserted into the 'offending' end and softens even impacted stool in 15 mins to 1/2 hour. If you've been constipated for a while, the insertion of the suppositories will give you the sensation you have to go right away. The longer you hold it in...the easier it will be to releave your self later.

Another thing I realized is due to my RNY, my pain meds would zoom through my system. Taking half a pill in shorter intervals (every three hours for me) was a lot easier on my system and more effective than taking the entire pill which only lasted 4 hours.

Sorry you are in pain, I had the same experience after RNY the suppositories are like MAGIC!

Wishing you well,
Rachel
