Questioning the Effectiveness of SMART Lipo

I am in the research stages of SMART Lipo...the surgeons are touting this procedure for wls patients. I am almost 4 years post op and feel I am at a stable weight despite having gained roughly 8 lbs since my 3 year surgiversary. My problem areas are my abs and uneven hips. Arms, legs, breasts ok and I can live with them. Any advice on this procedure would be appreciated. It seems to be able to both suck out fat and tighten without invasive surgery and long recovery but I am uncertain as to the long term results...in addition, the cost to have this procedure is more reasonable than a regular lbl. Please respond if you have any info.

I went on a number of consults and one surgeon had the smart lipo.  He told me that it might help a bit on my arms, maybe  but it would do nothing for my abs and hips.  He told me that I had more skin then fat, and this would not help that.  Another surgeon, laughed when I told him about the smart lipo.  He told me that it is so new that it has not even been FDA approved yet.  This means there is very little research into the results or long term studies.  He told me that every few years they hear of a new " wonder lipo" that will replace surgery.  He told me it will most likely never happen.  He said, think lipo for fat reduction and minimal skin and surgery for skin.  I ended up having a LBL and am very happy.

thanks for the reply. i believe smart lipo is now FDA approved. i am not sure i am a candidate but am willing to go for a consultation. i don't have alot of loose skin, only had to lose about 80 lbs. and i had been an exerciser before surgery and do go to the gym 5x a week now.

Sorry, I just looked up the surgeons website to find the exact type of lipo.  It is called bodytite lipo.  It is supposed to be the newest thing.  That is the one that is not FDA approved yet.  I apologize for the misunderstanding.

You might want to look at this two threads.  One of them mentions a thread where Dr. Lomonaco made some comments and I think I remember it but I could not find it, so you might want to look through his posts here on the plastics forum.

It is FDA approved.  Still very little research on it, yet a ton of internet hype. I've had the newer SmartLipo system for a year now.   The skin tightening effect on a WLS patient is going to be minimal, and any doctor saying that it will tighten your skin should produce his own pictures to prove it.  I sure can't !
