Hernia and LBL?
yes!
i recently had surgey and the didn't find it until they opened me up. Hernia was covered by the insurance company because it was necessary...not elective surgery. I would double check with the surgeon's office....but if this was your situation...I think you will be pleasantly surprised that the insurance company covers it....but.....it was not a vanity surgery. Good luck.
Hernias are very common, especially in patients who had an open procedure. Because of the malnutrirton caused by the bypass during the healing phase, hernias occur more commonly.
Umbilical hernias can be related to the port site, pregnancy, or they can be congenital.
Insurance can help cover the hospital and surgeon costs, so I get a CT scan on anybody I suspect of having one and personally review the images. They are often missed as the radiologists are focused on the internal changes!
The goal is to get insurance to agree upfront to fixing them so there won't be a fight later. Also, I don't like suprises during surgery !

Dr. L,
I went to your site. Beautiful work! If only you were in Wa. and a Group Health Doc :)
I am just starting to look into some plastic, its becoming obvious I will need it. Any advice on how to find a wonderful surgeon that will do beautiful work?

Even a hernia won't get you a free pass-- mine got me an overnight stay and $3k off the bill, but I still paid fully for the abdominoplasty itself.

Every physician bill for every procedure separate when they drop their charges for billing to process. Which means, if they go in to do a TT and find a hernia, they put in the ICD9 codes and related procedure codes for both the TT and the hernia repair.
So insurance will be billed for all procedures and only pay the ones they want/agree to cover.
I went in knowing I had hernia that would be repaired. All charges were billed to insurance but only fees related to the hernia repair were covered.
Now if the phsycian chooses not to charge for something, then that's up to them. But it's rare that would happen.

Only wishful thinking insurance would cover plastics. Lol my main concern is complications if I do have a hernia because with the lipo that will go along with it. With the cost involved just thinking might need to make sure I'm going to an innetwork surgeon, so if I did have to have hernia repair it wouldn't fall out of network with a sky high deductible. Not looking for a free ride. Always grew up with the belief "what goes around comes around" and when you try to cheat at anything including taxes and insurance it'll come back to bite your ass sooner or later. I appreciate all the feedback from my questions, try to check and respond to but don't always get the chance to. Pam
I like the way you were raised. You're parents did a great job.
My explanation was more of a clarification of one of the prior statements where, when I read it, it sounded like the charge for the ps was hidden behind the hernia charge. KWIM?
Now, there is a chance that if you're in there for ps, they find a hernia they bill the insurance for the hernia and whatever your responsibility of the hernia payment is that your surgeon could waive that. I've been on the receiving end of a phsyician accepting whatever insurance pays. And it's nice when they do that.
My PS dx'd my hernia on my initial consult - what he didn't know was is if it was something he would handle on his own or if he needed a general surgeon in there too. If it was something that involved mesh then he wanted a general surgeon to do it.
Keep us posted on how things go for you.
