Lymphatic Massages for swelling.......

Hello, I have read and was told that lymphatic massages help with swelling. I hope you read this Melissa (my06ds's) and give me your opinion. I called the chiropractors here in my area. No one knows of anyone who does the lymphatic massages.
I did have one of the Dr's call me back today after no luck of finding someone close that does the lymphatic massage. He explain to me that he believes an ultrasound  done will help this as well. He said it will relieve the drainage causing the swelling. He explained the best he could and said he has an opening today at 2pm if I wanted to try this. He said accupuncture would help as well but I opted out and thought since insurance will covert he ultrasound that I would go that route first.
He also mentioned lazer treatment that I believe he said helps reduce scarring.
I am going at 2pm today.
Has anyone heard of this or had first hand experience?
Any suggestions, opinions are appreciated!!
Thanks - Jenn

I have had the ultrasound done on my back/spine to help with swelling around herniated disks.  It did help, but it took a few treatments

Yes I have had ultrasound done as well. The first lymphatic massage therapist I went to included ultrasound treatment with her massages and it was great. She said  she really noticed a difference when she used it on clients.  She spent extra time on my back with it because my swelling was really bad their initially. I'm not sure how effective it is on its own but it's better than nothing for sure. Before I found my current therapist I had to commute almost an hour to my other one. I hated the drive but found it was well worth it. Now the chiropractor I found with the therapist I see is a true believer in acupuncture. We did one of those baseline tests and she was amazed at how it came out with the exceptions of the meridians that were located in the areas that run along my arms and my groins (right where I had surgery). Now the acupuncture she does isn't the typical type that you see with the needles. It's the type that sends "electricty" to the meridians that have been affected by surgery. So since my insurance covers it, I will be doing 4 weeks of them. Only takes 2 minutes. I kid you not. I hold on to this thing and she just touches or "zaps" each wrist and my ankles and that's it. No pain no fuss. After the 4 weeks she is going to retest me and see how much I've improved. Once we do that she also has a treatment for scars. That's a different machine and she really didn't get into it but she loves it. So I'm pretty much going to stop the lymphatic massages and move into more of a massage that will massage my incision areas which will help break up scar tissue and any fibrosis which in turn helps the scar. I can't remember all the medical terms she used but she is very confident that the treatment plan we have will do wonders for me.

As far as the lymphatic massages go, I think they have been a big help. As much as I whine about my swelling in my tummy, there has been little to no swelling in my arms and legs from this last round.  Really the swelling in my belly is so much better than it had been too, but I'm a year out from my LBL and 3 months out from lipo and my anchor cut revision.  It's funny because I had a post op appt today and the dr noticed one of my thighs was slightly larger than the other because of the swelling.  I never noticed it!  But then I didn't have a lymphatic massage this week since she was out of town.  Coincidence?  Who knows.  You know, if you are willing to self pay, you can call some spas and massage places and ask their therapists if they know anyone who does them. When I was calling around, there were a couple of them that knew how to do it but just weren't certified. I think if it came down to letting them do it or no one, I would have let them try. One of the ladies at one of the chiropractor's office even offered to get with a friend of hers who knew how to do it to give her a refresher so she could work on me. Another lady said she knew the techniques and has used it on some of her clients who had had lipo. So depending on how much time you want to invest in this, you may find someone who can help.

Here is a post I did last year which has good info to read when you have time.

I went to the chiropractors office yesterday and I too had the baseline test since he is a believer in accupuncture. Of course due to the surgeries I have had he said I had a lot of gaps in the meridian results. So he too suggests accupuncture.
First I had my ultrasound done to helpand then he did the lazer which he said helps reduce the scarring. We are going to do this 2 times a week for 4 weeks and see if there is improvement.
I also had the accupuncture (the electrical kind not needles) on my wrists, knees and ankles. He then said as an extra he always does one in the ear for energy. I will also have his done 2 times a week for 4 weeks and then he will retest to check for improvement. I am kind of anxious to see the difference in first test and 4 weeks test.Let me know how your test goes at the end of your 4 weeks.
I was so nervous having this done afraid I would mess something up but I found a website from a PS in California *****commends this to be done. That eased my fears. of course I could not see a difference in one visit but hope and he seems to think this will help me before my 18hr car trip in couple of weeks.
I am still on the search and thanks for your reply.

Jenn70-

I have lymphedema in my left leg, and I do get lymphatic dranage masage to help reduce the masses, and drain the fluid.

It does work, anf your best bet at finding a massage thrapy specialist would be to call your local hospital woman's health/breast cancer program, and ask them where they send their patients who are experiencing lymphedema.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage is a form of physical therapy, so you may want to also call local physical therapy practices to find out if they have anyone.

Thanks! I called all of the offices here in my small town in Iowa. Our closest "big" city is Sioux CIty, IA and it is 1hr 45min away and with work it would really be hard to go there and I am not even sure if they have anyone either.
I have alot of businesses here in our small town checking on it for me but so far no luck.
I will keep looking and thanks for your reply.

Hi everyone, just thought I'd add to the conversation. I am a massage therapist currently going through the lymphatic drainage massage certification program and am thrilled that you are seeing positive results from LDM! I don't know about the Iowa area, but until I am certified, I know several fantastic LDM therapists in the Sacramento, CA area that I would be happy to refer people to.

Blessings,

Thanks for replying I am sure that will help a lot of people living in that area. I have heard a lot of good reviews concerning the lymphatic massages and hope to find one soon. Until then  will continue with the ultrasound treatment.
