Busted: Infections at Outpatient Surgery Centers Underreported

I have commented in the past on infection rates at hospitals vs. outpatient centers, and the reputation of hospitals being epicenters for resitant germs like MRSA is deserved.

However, outpatient centers are not as tightly regulated, and so have had plenty of problems of their own.

Sadly, the cost-saving step of using of medicine vials made for single use on multiple patients seems to have been the problem in the Las Vegas infections.

A small speciality hospital is subject to JCAHO inspections, which stirs quite a bit more fear than the agencies accediting the outpatient centers and doctor's.

The case in Vegas  is sadly going to be the tip of the iceberg, but my hope is that tighter regulations will follow.  Can you imagine what it is like overseas, where there is NO regulation of these clinics ?

That's why I stayed stateside for my PS as well as my WLS. I'm medically compromised and even though many have had great results and were thrilled with their surgeries outside of the US, my personal preference is staying where I know that there is some type of regulation procedures in place. I did have some issues with the hospital that did my PS and was able to have them addressed quickly and reconciled to my satisfaction.

One can do a look up on Joint Commission Inspection reports at:  http://www.qualitycheck.org/consumer/searchQCR.aspx

I had mine done as an inpatient but I hurried my second phase to the earliest possible safe date following my tummy tuck because I was in the process of moving overseas.  While I have excellent medical care here, there is no way on earth I will enter into optional surgery here.

Probably shouldn't ask this question here, but I am.
Would like ballpark figure on your price for LBL please. I know the price would be subject to my needs.
Thank you, Pam

Hi Caramel...what have you heard about care in Dubai?  Iwas invited to tour one of their facilities there and it met JCI international standards.  Looked really nice too !

Red:  thanks for the link.  There is one I posted awhile back to check outpatient centers here in the U.S. and also international hospitals via Joint Commission.  I'll see if I can find it.

Pamtastic:  email me at [email protected] and we can do a virtual consult.  I can publish the price for that: free.
