Are you talking about the Navy Hospital?  Why would there be costs at a military treatment facility?

Back in the day you used to have to just pay for the food but the stay was free. Like when I had my son I payed something like 42 dollars cause I was there for four days or something, it's been so long. But yeah you just pay for the food. Now plastic surgery is a different story, if it's elective plastics then you pay a set fee.

My RNY surgery was no cost to me.  I was talking about PS.  Tricare doesn't cover elective PS.

The Tricare regulation allows a panniculectomy if medical necessity is documented.  Approvals are spotty.  But many have gotten approvals.  You can search the tricare regs at http://manuals.tricare.osd.mil/.  I used search term panniculectomy.  Or send me a PM with your email address and I can send you the reg    ( TP08 Chap 4 Sect 2.1 -- Cosmetic, Reconstructive, And Plastic Surgery - General Guidelines (TRICARE Policy Manual (TPM)).

Many have gotten surgery at an MTF at no cost .  So it surprises me to see you saying there is a charge.  However, it can be difficult to find a civilian plastic surgeon willing to take Tricare assignment.  I know of a surgeon here in Florida who takes Tricare and I have a friend whom had a panniculectomy covered by Tricare.  Her husband is retired military, as is mine.  So you might want to see if you can see a civilian surgeon.  With Tricare standard we do not have to have a referral.

When looking at what consitutes medical necessity Tricare is going to look at far down the pannus hangs and the skin breakdown.  Basicly they want to know the skin is making you ill and that it is an on going problem.  And certainly if you have a hernia repair at the same time that strengthens your case.

I just had to edit my response because I just noticed that you have already had your surgery. No cost for the surgery and stay in the hosp. Enjoy your gift/tool! Take care and I wish you luck on your journey!

Thank you and you as well!  I think I saw you in a couple of nutrition classes I went to and at the support group!  By your ticker it looks like you're doing great!

As far as I know with the RNY I haven't been charged anything yet, I only had 2 meal trays delivered so bring on that $10 charge lol.  I thought at the orientation meeting someone was speaking and had said something about plastics and that they weren't covered by tricare but were available at a highly discounted price?  But I was wondering the quality of the work etc.

Well I believe the price for plastics was $2000 per procedure. Now I heard that since the war the only thing they were doing for bariatric patients was the tummy tuck. Again back in the day they were doing it all but I guess now they don't have enough docs on site to do the stuff that isn't needed. I know a girl on my ship that had breast implants and said she was pleased with the work. She had to pay for the implants herself though and then they put them in. I would love to hear from some people that had plastics there. As well as see the results.
