Hi All,
Well I started using Mederma on my arm scars about a week ago  and I can't decide if I'm wasting my money and time appling this stuff 3-4 times a day. Before that I was just massaging my scars with cocoa butter lotion twice a day. I switched to the Mederma because I thought it might work better or quicker. Any info on your experience with Mederma and how well it worked for you or what scar care worked best for you would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've used Mederma on other surgical scars  - Lap RNY and Hysterectomy.  It takes a long time to fade them.

My PS just gave me a cream to start using on my incisions.  We haven't compared it to ingredients in Mederma yet but all of the active ingredients are sunscreen type stuff.  DH has been applying the stuff for me and he said that the incisions seem to be getting "softer."  I think it's too soon to tell if they're fading the scars just yet.

My surgeons say that cocoa butter works just as well. I was using mederma too on some scars but quit buying it because I didn't see "instant" results...LOL. It's expensive for the amount you get I think. I think the key is keeping the incision moisturized and massaging them to break up any scar tissue. Dr L will tell you that he thinks cocoa butter helps some and that there really isn't any evidence proving that anything else works any better. I think it's all a matter of opinion. He does recommend silicone strips for widening and keloid scars though. All scars will eventually fade on their own with time. Even the same scar will fade at different times depending on their location and length of scar. Sorry I wasn't any help. I just wish I had the majic answer!

Thanks you girls for your replies.
Melissa, I think your doctors are on to something. I had been doing just that, using cocoa butter and massage and they were improving. I switched to Mederma in hopes it would work faster. It actually seemed to make my scars look worse. They were more red and the skin around them was peeling. Mederma also had started to make me itch and it burned sometimes when I first put it on. I have decided to go back to cocoa butter and massage. I will probably just stick with that unless my surgeon sugests something else. I have my 1 week post from my sencond surgery tomorrow. I will have him look at my arms scars and see what he says. Everyone else says they look really good. I think I'm just nitpicky and impatient. Patience is indeed a virtue! Thanks again for your opinions and info.

Me, too! I think I will switch back to cocoa butter and see how it goes.

I told my PS that I was using cocoa butter and he said he thought that was as good as anything, maybe better becasue you have to rub it in for a long time so you get a good massage too.
