Hey everybody! I just wanted to get everyones advice on what to expect.
I am having a MID JOURNEY panniculectomy on June 18th.. The surgeon didn't say how much he thought it weighed, but I have a huge amount to take off.. I will lose my belly button AND he IS doing a mons lift too (which I asked for because I was concerned about it) Anyway, what should I expect healing wise? I know I will have a lot of drains. What do I hang them on? What about swelling? Will I fit in my old clothes? Also, will I be expecting to buy a smaller size afterwards? I am so excited! Any information/advice you have is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

1st of all..YAH for you!!!  I ahd my panni removed 4 weeks today...it was day surgery, they took off 5 lbs of skin, and I have a long incision across my bikini line.  I healed up real fast and only had 2 drains and the 1st was removed a week later and the other a few days after the 1st....they weren't as bad as I thought and my hubby took care of them for me.  The drains are pinned on your binder and when you are able to shower I used a piece of string, tied it loosly around my neck and poinned them to that.  I fit into my old clothes and find them a bit big..but my mid belly is still puffy since I did not ahve the tummy tuck adn I feel self consious about it and my hios are still wide, but all in all I am very happy!!  Feel free to email me any questions...  [email protected]   Good Luck!!  Monica

Thank you very much! That information was very helpful to me!
I think it's going to be around 15-20 lbs removed. (I had a 150lb weight loss, with more to go)... The surgeon said he thinks at least 4 or 5 drains. Did you have a mons lift too? I won't be having a tummy tuck either, so my "top tummy" will still be here.. But I am fine with that since I have been dealing with this horrible hanging, HEAVY apron for a very long time.. I just want that gone.. They have girdles, binders, etc.. that will help me with my "top belly" LOL!! ;)

The skin actually weighs a lot less than you may think.  I thought mine would be 20 lbs or more but mine was 13lbs.  I lost 40lbs since my surgery.  It really kicked my metabolism in gear.  I went from a size 22 to a size 16.  I will need a revision later.  I had 100lbs to lose prior to my surgery, but I had chronic backpain that has completely resolved since my surgery!

I had a 160 pound loss...they took 7+ pounds but we all carry our weight differently.
2 drains...in the mons....
Yes, on the mons....my PS is very particular about this part because of the nerves in that area...too much taken off can create issues with sexual experience... I am well pleased, but I would be prepared to expect a little sag.
I am 6 weeks out.  Binder/compression garment 24/7 for the first 3 weeks, then off at bedtime.  Now I don't have to wear it.  It helps with discomfort of pain and swelling issues. I went back to work at 4 weeks, but have not returned to exercise program until my check up next week.

GOOD LUCK...

Thank you for your response! I will most definately wear my binder and I am buying some compression garments.. Can you tell me which is better? Stage 1 or 2? I know it says stage one for post op.. and stage 2 for a few weeks after.. BUT I want something tight, that will control swelling, AND to wear after to help with my "top tummy" lol...
THANK YOU!

Stage 1 - Design Veronique for 6 weeks.
Stage 2 - Marena for after 6 weeks.

The swelling for me has been bad mostly in my upper thighs.  The upper tummy doesn't swell if I wear my garment.

Wear it 24 hrs a day for the first 6 weeks.  And I now wear it only when I work and am out and about.

I can certainly understand your excitement!

I had 3 drains. You will have them safety pinned to your binder when you wake up. You can still pin them on your binder or pants when you are home. I had my drains for about a week, but that is because I am on Coumadin and my surgeon wanted to take them out as quickly as possible. You may have yours in longer.

I have always worn stretch pants. There is definately a noticeable difference. I can even wear dresses and skirts now that don't look like huge circus tents!

Recovery is different for everyone. My surgeon told me that recovery can be like a roller coaster. Ond day you will be fine, and the next you wonder if you made a mistake and if you will ever heal. I am 3 1/2 months post op and still struggle sometimes, but I have a low thresh hold for pain sometimes.

I first noticed my thighs when I woke up. I haven't seen my thighs in years!  Boy are they flabby!!!!  But my cat can finally sit in my lap, instead of on my enormous belly.  It has its up's and downs. As I recover, I am hoping for more ups and less downs.

Just wait till they make you sit in a chair and you look down and actually see your lap! That was my first WOW moment.

I will be praying for you!  Take care and God bless!

Do you see the glass as half empty or half full? I say, what difference does it make--I paid for a full glass,so either way I am getting jipped!!!

Thank you Miss Kitty for your response. I know we've talked already and I really appreciate you and your candid responses..
TOMORROW IS SURGERY DAY!  I am getting anxious. Hope my nerves calm down a bit.. I can relate on the lap thing. I haven't seen mine in a very long time (wonder if I ever did.. lol)... Yes, that will be a shocker, I bet. The pants thing has got me wondering too.. I wear all elastic waist pants now, and for a long time, since button/zip doesn't fit right.. I am SO curious as to what I will look like in regular pants now.. Specifically jeans. I can't wait. Looks like I'll need a whole new wardrobe.. LOL
Well thanks everybody and I'll keep you guys posted after I'm home from surgery!
