I had arms and LBL done on 3/16..I came home with 6 drains. I did not lose the last drain til 3 weeks out! They are a pain to deal with but really do help with swelling issues..hang in there it gets better!

Aloha-
The purpose of leaving the drains in as long as possible is that it allows serum ( the peachy fluid) to escape from the pockets of space that were created when the skin was removed. When this serum is evacuated via a drain, it no longer puts pressure on your healing incisions and you can heal faster. Leaving them in too long, though, increases the risk of infection and inflammation ( irritation) from having that foreign drain material in your body. So most doctors leave them in anywhere from 2-20 days....but 20 days is on the long side. They usually like to see less than 25-30 cc fluid draining in a 24 hour period before pulling the drain. So measuring it is important.
I came home with 7 drains after my circumferential belt lipectomy and breast lift/augmentation, and they started pulling them by day 2 post op. By day 12 they were all out. Even though I had followed all directions to avoid multivites with Vit E ahead of time, I still oozed at surgery time, hence the 5 drains in my abdomen and one in each breast. I wanted them pulled ASAP, but I'm a vet and have dealt with drains every single day of my career, so I knew they were serving a purpose.
I was very lucky in that I never had to wear compression garments and all my swelling/edema resolved very quickly- within the first 4 weeks post op. I never swell now, 3 months post op, even after hard workouts, while friends I know who were operated on months before me are still dealing with swelling whether they work out or wear compression garments or not. I do think getting tons of protein in pre and post op has helped me heal quickly- if you are not getting at least 125 g in per day, you should try upping it by whatever means necessary- protein shakes before bed, etc - if you've had a DS, you need to up it even more as DSers malabsorb their protein. I upped it for 3 weeks pre op and also had lots of muscle built up at plastics time- both recommendations by my surgeon.
Heal well, you only have one shot at doing it right the first time! And get that protein in, even if you don't feel like eating - it's essential. XOXOLori

I'm not trying to be fresh but it stops when it stops........
Most surgeons I know want you to pull less than 20 (or 25) cc in a 24hr period....until then they will leave the drains in. I've had some stay in 2 days and after other surgeries they've been in 2-3 weeks.....just depends.
