post op panniculectomy issues
hello everyone!
my names missy, I'm 26 and on march 22 2010 i underwent a panniculectomy surgery after naturally losing over 80lbs, my surgeon said they removed aprx 5 lbs of skin and fat, everything was going well until a few days ago when i noticed on my right side at the end of the incision there's a gap..hole..what ever you want to call it leaking puss..also noticed in my upper abdomen about 5 inches from belly button there are tender "hard spots"..also noticed along incision across pelvic region its inflamed and swollen with hard spots larger on the right side than left..at the end of the incision on my left side its completely healed but burns and itches just as much as the infected hole on my right side...for the most part I'm completely healed up..no scabs,.. just the scar from the surgery... except for the hole on my right side..is this common should i be concerned..does anyone know what the hard spots are..my biggest fear is could it be puss pockets and there's more of an infection than just the hole..I'm confused..i don't want to go in to the hospital unless i know somethings terribly wrong....has this happened to anyone else..and if so what did you find out and what was done

Call your surgeon immediately! I know it's a Saturday night, but it sounds as if you have an infection. It is extremely risky to wait until Monday. Your surgeon most likely has an answering service on the weekends for emergencies or has a covering doctor who will meet you in the nearest emergency room at your local hospital to evaluate your abdominal incision as well as your "hard spots".

The hard spots could be internal stitches that have not dissolved and are making their way to the top...this is not uncommon. It could also be scar tissue forming under and around the incision.... Call your surgeon to let him know and he'll advise you what to do. My surgeon always has me massaging the incision line to keep it soft and prevent or breakdown any scar tissue.
So far as the hole......sounds like you may have popped a few stitches. Because it has *****ou MUST call your surgeon. If you let it go and the infection spreads you could have big problems. Not trying to frighten you but you don't want to ignore it. A small spot today can become a large wound quickly that the surgeon has to cut open and debred...then you have to do wet/dry packing twice a day for months! NOT FUN....trust me. So call your surgeon and get an appointment to see him/her.
