Compression garment vs. binder

Ok, so I am aware that a compression garment and a binder are probably the same thing, but I have read on here many discussions about the compression garments.

I was told by my surgeon that after my panniculectomy that I would be sent home in a binder that I would be required to wear for a month. Also since i am having inner thigh lift through the groin area, that my thighs would be supported by a type of "fishnet" stockings.

I was also told that hhis would be an overnight stay in the hospital, and would be sent home next day, and would have visiting nurses coming in to check me, and teach me how to measure and empty drains, etc.

I trust my doctor, but i read on here by so many of you that you were in compression garments for MONTHS!!  any information you can provide will be great.

A compression garment and a binder are 2 different types of support.  The binder is a wide band varying in width size that closes with velcro.  The compression garment is like a girdle that can also vary in size...like a panty or as large as a full body girdle going from the ankles to the bottom of your breasts.  Go to makemeheal.com and you'll get quite the education on all kinds of support your doctor recommends.

I've never heard of the stockings he's talking about but if it provides COMPRESSION, then I guess it would be okay. You can call it whatever you want but the most important thing of whatever you are wearing is that it the right amount of compression to help with healing and swelling. After my thigh lift I had ace bandages around my thighs to provide the compression for my thighs for the first week before I moved into my garment. I know some people have worn binders first and them moved into the compression garments afterwards after their TT. I think you'll be okay.

Each surgeon has a different protocol and each protocol will be adjusted for your individual needs...so, go with what your surgeon recommends and adjust that schedule as needed with his/her input.

My surgeon says compression garments 24/7 for the first two weeks, then only during waking hours for the next 2-4 weeks. However, he also said that if it makes ME feel better, I can wear them longer and no harm would be done. I think that is a lot of what you see on this site; people adjusting the surgeon's recommendations to fit THEIR needs/wants/desires.

Good luck.
