BM disapointment

So I was super proud of myself for having a BM just 3 days post op. And I even had one again on Saturday after my ER visit and a good couple of doses of Dilaudid.
So Im super disappointed that Im on day 6 of no BM and now kinda worried. I have been taking Colace daily - I have been eating oatmeal and eating Spaghetti Squash (i.e. FIBER) and NOTHING. I am gassy - so things are working - but no production there.
My surgeon has me going to pick up glycerine suppositories and a fleet enema...

I guess the reason Im sharing this is for 2 things,:

1. People need to know the reality of this surgery and use of pain pills - this can happen and I imagine would be much worse if I didn't stay on top of the colace and such too

2. Im humiliated and frustrated and a little bit scared of this whole "up the butt" thing. Any ideas or advice on which one worked best - I rather get it the first try if you know what i mean! TELL ME IM NOT THE ONLY ONE!!

So sorry you are going through this...I was there also at a little less than 2 weeks post op.  IT WAS AWFUL...absolutely the worst thing EVER!!  I don't understand why pain pills do that to us.  I was like you, took my colace RELIGIOUSLY (I personally now believe colace is worthless), was drinking PRUNE JUICE and eating fiber...and STILL got clogged up!

The office put me on the same thing, the suppositories, which only slightly helped, then the enema, which i was seriously awful...  I talked to my  cousin who had a TT a year ago and she had the same thing.  She told me DO NOT got to the ER.  She said it was the worst experience of her life.  She told me after the enima, if it didnt' work, to put on the rubber finger glove thingy and dig it out yourself.  Because that is what they do when you go to the ER.  So...not to gross everyone out too bad, but that is exactly what I had to do..."work it out myself".  Seriously, it was so traumatic, that I am really going to try and take NO PAIN PILLS when I have my thighs and arms done this summer!!

So, my advice...go for the fleet...and have those finger gloves ready to help it the rest of the way!!

Good luck on the no pain pills for the arms and thighs!!  LOL

I took senekot-S and had my smoothies with lots of fruit.  It was probably day 4 by the time I went but that was okay considering my arms were out of commission.  It took a while to get back to being regular but it did.  I know some people swear my teh herbal tea called Smooth Move that you can get a GNC.  I bought it for my LBL but never needed it.  It's only like $6.  Worth a try!

I KNOW!!!  This is why your honest accounts of the pain are freaking me out...because I decided I was going to "white knuckle it" through the pain...but now after hearing from you I doubt I'll be able to do it...but I'm still going to at least TRY it!!  Because with my LBL and BL, I was only taking 1 pain pill a day...and it STILL stopped me up like that!!  So no way I'd survive more!!  I think I'm actually dreading that more than the pain post op!  LOL!

Oh Dear!  Don't white knuckle it!  Yikes!  I used the Senecot tea that you can get at Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods.  It was gentle and just made my stool soft enough to happen.  I had my first BM at 24 hours post op and every day after that.  I drank the tea each night before bedtime.  My doctor had told me to not strain because that can cause problems with any muscle repair.

Yeah, I'm thinking the "white knuckling" probably won't happen...but I was leary of the different teas because when I looked at the packaging it said it has stimulants and could cause cramping which my doctor said to avoid...but if it was gentle, maybe I'll give it a shot BEFORE surgery and see how it reacts with my body.  Because once you get clogged up, you can't help but STRAIN...NIGHTMARE!!

Definitely don't white knuckle it.  You just really want something to take the edge off.  Just take 1 pill if you have to.  You will be able to do it.  The results are so worth it! Take everything you can for the constipation whether you think you need it or not.  Definitely get some of that tea along with everything else.  As long as you're prepared, you'll be fine!

Yeah - about a year and half ago I was pregnant and we lost our baby. They gave me pain meds in the hospital to help with the contractions (I couldn't stop contractions cause we needed them to get it all out, but didn't want the pain as the emotional was already too much for me!). They didn't tell me that a BIG side effect was inability to use the restroom.
So 2 days later I was back in because I coudn't urinate. They sent me home with a catheter for 3 days. Then 2 wks later I hadn't had a bowel movement (this was pre-RNY so I was eating BIG meals and THANKSGIVING), and suddenly was in SO much pain that my body was pushing on it's own. I tried laxatives, magnesium citrate, enemas, etc. Nothing.
I went to the ER where they xrayed me and found that I had a CANTELOPE sized ball in there.
So they had to literally sit me on a potty chair and stick a HAND up there to break it up.
It was the single most humiliating moment of my life. I was hysterical and they kept trying to calm me - but having that done while still dealing with the death of our baby was more than I could take.

I am so terrified this wl happen again. So we went and got fleet enema (burned like hell) and I still only got a little ball or two out. Im eating prunes now - and then if no more by tonight Ill take more colace - eat another yogurt and do another enema in the morning.

I must say my hubby is such a trooper - I love him - I can't believe I just had him shove something up my bum!

WOW...what an awful awful thing to have gone through!!!  And yes, the fleet really only partially helped, my finger had to do the bulk of work...good luck!!  And yes, my hubby had to do all kinds of things he probably never thought he'd have to do...thru my 2 c-sections, 2 stomach surgeries and now plastics!!  However, thanks to plastic surgery and the garmet...i think i've finally broken him of his crotchless panties obession!!  LOL!
