TT/Panni drain question
I had a TT/Panni on 3/9. I went for my post op today and the doctor chewed me a new a**hole. He said I am doing way to much and that I should be in bed and basically only getting up to go to the bathroom. I have no pain and when I'm tired (which is quit often) I take a nap. I go for walks and do light stuff around the house. The doc won't even let me travel to my son's grandparents next week...said no travel until about 6 weeks out. He said he can tell I am doing to much cuase I am having a bunch of fluid coming out. My left has been about 115-120 and my right is 30 - 40 in a 24 hr period. He said with this much fluid coming out that I could have complications to the extent that the skin layer won't adhere to the muscle he tightened and cause a ballooning effect. Then he would have to go in with a needle and take out the fluid. He also said that usually at least one drain comes out within a week of surgery and now it's been a week and a half for me and I still have both in. What the hell?? Is this normal or is he just being extra cautious? What numbers did your drains come out? Any help would be great.
Thank you,
Michelle

I had an LBL & brachio done and my surgeon actually recommended walking to avoid blood clots. I'm not talking speed walking but he definately advocated activity. He ok's me to go back to work at 4 weeks and actually was fine w/ me going to the gym at week 3 and walking on the treadmill (probably only 3.5 mph for an hour). Had the same restriction on the lifting, wouldn't let me do the weights again until I was 6 weeks out.
My drains came out when they were 30 cc's or less in 24 hours. I had 4 total, the first 2 in the groin came out at 10 days out at my first follow up appt. 3rd drain was out at week 4 and final drain out at week 6.

I told him that I was going to the gym walking on the treadmill at 1.5 and he said he doubts that and that with the drains still in the gym was a breeding ground for germs to cause an infection.
When he said no traveling for more than hour cause that could cause blood clots. My thought is how is that different than staying in bed 24/7.
I haven't done a dang thing today and my one drain is filling up. When the docc sees the numbers he will think I was out and doing things...I'm in a lose lose situation.

Your frustraton and discouragement are high....maybe it would ease your thoughts to know that it is better you are draining than to develop a fluid pocket that can easily get infected. Give yourself the benefit that you will fully recover...many have traveled this journey....and you will find yourself in a better place soon. Blessings on your healing....
My dr told me not to do much either. Even if I felt like I could which I did. I would have never thought of going to the gym before 6 weeks. I wanted to be sure my insides were healed well and I didn't want to risk any injury. I did get up and putz around the kitchen a little bit at a time and walk the driveway a few times to have some activity but nothing for long periods of time. Once I hit the 3 or 4 week mark I was able to do more and not basically force myself to rest like I had been. I had one drain taken out at 6 days and the other at 10. It was hard staying still and resting so much especially since I'm used to being on the go all the time.

You really do need to still be taking it easy. You are only 9 days out. It is important not to put undue stress on your surgery sites. I know it is hard to lay around and not do a lot but if you overdo too soon it will only prolong your recovery. You should not be exercising this soon. Walking is a good thing to prevent clots. Find a good book. Do puzzles. Sounds like you have a doctor *****ally cares about your recovery. I had my drains for nine days. Drains usually are in until they drain a certain amount, each person is different. It will get better & you will be glad that you kept those drains in until they stopped draining. JodiI go back in a month and had my drains pulled yesterday and I have a little bit of mabe infection
