I don't recall having a problem lying down.  Getting up was a little difficult, but i could NOT have done it in a recliner.  I practiced before surgery and I definitely had to use my tummy muscles in our recliner.

I slept in a lift recliner for almost 2 weeks. My dr wanted me in a lawn chair position for that long. Even if he hadn't I wouldn't have wanted to lay flat anyway since I was sore. Once I did go back to bed I had no problem. Usually if you can walk standing straight you shouldn't have a problem. I used the lift chair just to make it easier for me and so I wouldn't have to worry about the lever in a regular recliner.

I don't think I could get comfortable anywhere the first couple nights. I did sleep in the recliner but needed help getting up. Then when I was able to sleep in bed I had pillows under my knees and head elevated. And it was still hard getting up.

I didn't have a recliner so I set all the pillows up like a recliner in my bed.  I put pillows under my knees and behind my back.  It worked well!  And I think the bed was much higher and easier to get in and out of.

I stayed in a recliner chair for the first 2 or 3 nights only because I was in an after-care facility and that's where they put me...LOL
When I got home I went straight to bed and had no problem....I was just propped up on pillows.
