Blood clots

How do you know if you get a blood clot?  Also, is anyone on Yaz?  I am and since they stress a higher risk for blood clots, it has me worried about adding plastic surgery to it as well.  Should I get off of Yaz during my surgies?

Thanks
Stacey

You need to discuss this with your surgeon at your consult.  I have no idea about how BC pills effect clotting, but you will want to know how to plan should you need to come off the BC pills.

think most PS's will want you off them the month prior to surgery!!!  i couldn't even take my multi-vit with E because E effects the blood.

I was on yaz (for pcos, not for birth control), and I had to stop because of the significant risk.

Blood clots after surgery are an area of intense activism right now by several health agencies because they can have dire consequences, yet reserach indicates that there is still significant undertreatment of them by doctors, and inadequate preventative measures taken.

Exogenous hormones (like birth control) are one of several risk factors for clot development.  Immobilization, the compression garment, travel, and other issues that are particular to plastic surgery patients also play a role in increasing risk.

The bottom line is that every patient undergoing surgery and/or hospitalization should have a risk assessment and plan for blood clot prevention.
