How long will I need constant help?

I'm having a TT, LBL and BL for my first procedure. My mom is flying in to stay with me for the first 2 weeks. Will I need constant help for longer than that? I have a sister-in-law who is also willing to come stay with me after that for another week or 2 if needed. I want to be independent as soon as I can, but I also don't want to push myself unrealistically. Any thoughts/input?

I did not have my BL with my LBL.. but for my LBL my mom stayed for about 10 days.  I was very glad to have her around.

So were you able to care for yourself after that without any problems? I have friends who will come help me with dressings if needed. I'm just hoping I can get around well enough to cook and shower on my own. I'm planning to do some make ahead meals to freeze so I don't have much work to do.

I was doing pretty well about 7 days out.  After she left I was pretty much back to doing it all myself.  I did have lifting restrictions, etc for a while and I also had a my youngest son still living at home (he was 19 at the time)... but I cooked, showered, cleaned some, shopped etc by myself after she left.

I had an LBL w/ brachio. My mom stayed pretty much full time for the first week then would stop in and out the second week. After about 2 weeks I was pretty much able to do most things by myself. She would just make sure things were on countertop level and not too heavy. You'll probably be fine after 2 weeks but still nice to have someone on call in case you do need something but probably won't need them to stay w/ you full time. If they can just stop by during the day or when you call them you'd be fine.

Hi Sara,

You had the same proceedures as me. I think that you will be fine by 2 weeks, perhaps some meals can be made ahead of time for that 3rd week so you still don't have to do much but re heat, but as far as needing full time care, I doubt you'll need it unless you have any complications....Course, if you just want the company, that's another thing altogether. I slept alot, even in the 3rd week, but was able to get myself food and water....Best of luck, Lynette

I have not had that kind of help after any of my plastics and I have been ok.  My DH works so after my discharge from the hospital I am pretty much on my own.

Thanks for all your input. I'm very independent and normally think I can handle things without any help, but I just wanted to be sure. I'm trying to cover my bases since my family lives 10 hours away, and I can't just say I need help without any warning. I didn't need any help after my WLS, but I've heard it's a lot more painful and difficult to get around after PS, especially when you do upper and lower body work at the same time.

Just remember about the lifting restrictions.  If you think you need help lifting, opt for some help the following two weeks; however, I'm two weeks out  and can care for myself except for the lifting.  Lin
