Weight management after plastic surgey

How have you managed or maintained your weight after plastic surgery? I am not able to exercise while recovering which I hear can be 3 months or longer. I do not want to gain any weight and am really anxious about not being able to run for a while. I had a fully TT with muscle tightening on 12/28 and went back in today to be re opened due to developing a post op seroma and now I am really worried about the time it will take my body to heal and be ready to exercise.

My main concern now is weight gain so I am trying not too eat too much and trying not to snack at all except for an occasional banana or 1/2 pack of peanut butter crackers. I am also having difficulty getting my fluids in which i know are important to recovery and weight maintenance but it is still hard. I am typically a tea drinker but will stick mainly to water due to my inability to burn the extra calories.

I wonder is there any type of exercise that will be safe to do in a few weeks because I do not see myself being able to maintain my weight with just slow walks daily. I dont consume huge amounts or eat often but I have been the same weight for the past year and that has been with lots of exercise. My weight fluctuates about 10 pounds on any given day due to the severe swelling I get in my legs. My start weight was 448 pounds, My lowest has been 226, on 12/28 I was at 237 and today I weighed in at 230.

What are some suggestions to maintaining my weight? I still want to lose 40 pounds but right now want to focus on not gaining.

I planned a breast lift for later this year but may not go forward with it due to the exercise issue.

Please advise.

I had a TT with muscle tightening and BL/BA on January 16, 2009 and wasn't able to exercise for the first 6 weeks and then when my PS released me it was another week before I did anything at all even slow walks.  If you're watching your diet, you'll be ok.  I found that when I did start exercising the swelling was HORRIBLE in my abdomen so I'd workout, I'd be swollen to the point of pain and then not able to workout for a few days.  It was a vicious cycle so finally I just decided not to workout at all for a couple more months.  I walked everyday, but no lifting, elliptical, spinning, etc.  I'd say it was May or June before I got back to it.  I maintained my weight because I watched my diet.

I have always fluctuated about 5-7 pounds anyway.  Concentrate on healing and you'll be able to workout when your body is ready to.

I wasn't able to excercise for about 8 month because of all the surgeries I have had when I was abl to from 1 surgery I had another one, I had the same concerns, so I jus****ched my diet.
Decaf tea is fine and has no calories itself depending what you put in it.
In a few weeks you will be able to walk more, probably no weight lifting yet, ask you Dr. he will tell you when it is safe
good luck Susan

I've gone totally back to my immediatly post WLS diet, I did full liquids for the first week and now im doing just soft solids and my protien shakes, and so far I've lost about 10lbs in addition to the almost 5 they took off. I wouldn't worry too much about working out for a while, our bodies are working hard enough just healing without us adding pressure of working out. Keep getting in your protein and liquids and i'm sure you will do great!

I was extremely worried about gaining weight during my time off of intense exercise since I worked out 6 mornings a week plus 2 evening classes a week prior to surgery. For me, I am 5 weeks postop and back to my original preop weight but do swell occasionally more than my usual. I really thought I would pack on the weight but it hasnt happened. I have been walking about 45 minutes a day (at 2.0 now up to 2.7) on treadmill. I try to avoid salty foods and make sure I get my protein/liquids in. I am going to be adding little bits of cardio in little by little so I dont overdue it at any one time.
Good luck to you.

Thanks you all for your responses. I will continue to monitor my diet and make sure I don't snack and I will try to walk around the house a little and in a few weeks start walking slowly on the treadmill.

All of you on this forum are great. Thanks for sharing you thoughts, opinions and experiences. it is very helpful.

Follow the docs advice.  You can lose weight and run again.  I am a runner too and have not been able to do anything for over 2 months.  I gained about 2 pounds because it takes energy to heal.  So you need to eat nutriously now also.  I am excited about starting to run and lift in a week.

Good luck.

Aloha HD-
I am sure I sound like a broken record, but I will continue because I believe passionately about this stuff!

PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN is your best friend while healing. You need it for your incisions to heal. You need it for your immune system to avoid infection (so your incisions can heal!). You need it for satiety so you won't be tempted to snack (not sure what your hunger situation is like, but the sitting around that recovery necessitates could lead you to snack when not hungry). You need it so that as you heal, you have stores of dietary protein to use as building blocks instead of using your body's protein stores ( =muscle)---- this spares your hard earned muscle mass (which keeps your metabolic rate higher) and helps prevent gain even when you cannot exercise as much as you were before. Every bite you put in right now should have something that benefits you- protein, fiber, water- do not waste your intake on something that is nutritionally vacant ( refined carbs, sweets, etc).  If you are going to eat a snack of simple carbs like a piece of fruit- try and eat it with some fat/protein at the same time ( a handful of almonds, a piece of string cheese, Greek yogurt eg) to soften the rapid metabolism of that simple carb- otherwise your BG spikes, then your insulin spikes, making your BG drop rapidly, making you crave more carbs  and directing that glucose down the fat-producing pathway. I am not saying avoid fruit! But choose a low GI fruit if you can, and eat it with some protein/fat at the same time.

WATER WATER WATER- I don't see how tea adds calories- unless you are adding sugar? Try a squeeze of lemon, or drink it iced, or use stevia. Sometimes a warm snack takes longer to ingest than a cold snack, and it also helps with satiety - for example, bean soup, chili, beef or chicken vegetable soup might be a better choice than crackers because it forces you to eat more slowly and has fiber/protein/liquid to boot. No bread, rice, or pasta- empty calories! Avoid canned soups (excess sodium), and definitely get your 64+ oz water in to keep your system flushed and avoid constipatiuon.

ONLY DO WHAT YOU ARE CLEARED FOR. Almost everyone is cleared to walk very soon post op to avoid clots. Getting up and moving around helps your  lymphatic system clear excess fluid from your body and limbs. Ask about lifting some dumbells while sitting- or doing calf raises while sitting with a phone book resting on your thighs- but always ASK FIRST! I will be following in your footsteps in less than 2 weeks and I am so bummed about giving up the workouts - but I also know I'll be cleared sooner if I follow all instructions early on and don't saboitage my healing by doing too much.
