Exercise post op: the good, the bad, and the ugly

I was having a really hard time the last two weeks, eating sugar, not sleeping well, feeling down. I wasn't supposed to exercise until 6 weeks out because of my abdominal work. Starting in week three though, I used the treadmill twice a week. Then at the beginning of this week, week 5, I decided to get back to some cardio.

It's amazing how much it makes me feel like a person again, and I'm regaining control over my eating. I've gone to two kickboxing class, jogged, and went to Zumba. Jogging is the most painfiul, but that's because of the DAMN LIPO!!!! I can't believe how it hurts after 5 weeks! Don't get me wrong, in normal activities it doesn't bother me at all, but if I try to masage lotion on, or if I do jolting execises like joging or throwing punches- OUCH! I would get the lipo again in a heart beat though.

Unlike some people's posts, I think exercise actually reduces the swelling in my belly, but it increases my leg swelling by 100 times. I guess that can't hurt though right? Anyway, back to strength training next week!

First, I like it that you have a "crazy goal" :)

I haven't had my plastics yet so I don't have all the answers but as a nurse I will say it is usually ok to do what you can tolerate.  I wouldn't push the activities that are making you swell, that is probably a sign you went too far.  Slowly increase your activity and you will do better than if you do too much too fast.  Glad you are feeling better.  I know its hard to go from an active lifestyle to taking it easy.

Hey there Katie! Heather and I both spoke to Dr S and he said we could walk on the treadmills when we got home as long as we didn't go to fast or do inclines. It feels so good to get into the gym. Hubby and I go for 1/2 hour and I only walk at 2.0mph. This is soooo slow but I wouldnt do any faster and it satisfies my workout craving.

Yeah, when I got home I did 30 minutes at 4.0 and 4%. That didn't go over so well!! Lesson learned.

Yay! That's good to know. I want to at least walk. :) The kickboxing and zumba didn't hurt? There is a low impact Body Vive class I could do as well.

My PS totally shut me down today when I asked about doing the bike (I usually ride a stationary bike 3 days a week b/c I have a bad knee and there is nothing better at keeping it moving and pain free).  I did walk for about an hour in a few stints today.  I'm so happy to hear that you guys are exercising because sitting here is making me NUTS!

I hate to say it Katie, but all my lipo places still hurt when I work out or if I do too much, and I am 11 weeks post op!  I am still glad that I did the lipo too though!

This Lipo thing is crazy! Sometimes when I go to get up I will get a burning sensation that takes awhile to go away...not happy camper when that happens.

Glad you are feeling better!

Just be careful with the exercise...you can do damage .  I jumped back into my cardio on right about the same time after my TT and I ended up pulling/straining a muscle.....

Do what you can but please be careful.

I know how you feel Kat, I feel so GROSS because I haven't been able to exercise at the intensity that I love for months due to injuries and now I've got another couple months on the side lines ahead of me due to the PS.  I've not been watching what I'm eating or drinking and I really gotta get a handle on it all.

I'm shocked to hear how long the Lipo is bothering everyone, is the pain level bad enough that you can't really run or is it tolerable and just annoying?

Happy Christmas eve!
