Surgery and anesthesia - post op

Merry Christmas!!!

I am brand new to this forum, but wanted to ask question with regard to anesthesia as I am very seriously considering a face-lift.

Specifically, I want to know if there is difference with the anesthesia process post-op?   Does the anesthesiologist need to do anything thing differently?

Also, I always get deathly sick (nauseous and throwing up ) after I wake up from surgery, is this going to be a problem for me since I've had RNY?

Trust me, I feel like such a moron asking these questions but, honestly, I really don't know the answers so figured I'd turn to my OH family for more info.

I sooooooo thank you in advance for your response...

I did not have WLS surgery but I always get very sick from general anesthesia.  I make sure I talk to the anesthesiologist so they can give me medicine while I'm under that will make recovery easier.  Since they started doing this I have had no issues after 5 out of 7 of surgeries I've had in the last 8 years.

Make sure you let your doctor, the O.R. nurse and the anesthesiologist know you need the anti-nauseous medicine.  I'm sure they do all they can to help you with it.

Thank you for your kind responses.  I do always let the anesthesiologist and others involved in my care know about my issues.  I also get loaded up with anti-nausea medicine as I'm going under, and while it certainly helps, it does not eliminate the terrible nausea.

While the nausea is a problem, my concern is with regard to the anesthesia process itself.  Is there anything different involved since I've had RNY?  For instance, if they put a tube down my throat or something of that nature, is there a problem?  If I do begin throwing up, is there a problem?

I will, of course, make everyone involved in my care aware that I have had RNY, but I want to be aware of any concerns I should have in the event a medical person may attempt to do something that may cause me a problem.  I don't want to allow something out of my own ignorance that could be harmful.

Again, any responses would be so kindly appreciated.

Hi Deb,
Sorry I can't help with the RNY part of the question.  I did not have WLS.

For sure you need to let everyone know you had an RNY.  Maybe your WL surgeon could answer this for you??

Best wishes!

I'm another one that gets very sick from anesthesia but with the last two surgeries (RNY and LBL), I haven't had a problem.  It surprised me with the RNY (had that one in Utica), but it REALLY surprised me when I had the LBL here in Ottawa - I was sure I would be waking up vomiting.  But I let them know ahead and I guess they took measures to prevent it.

I  get really sick after anesthesia and it is okay even with the RNY, I was afraid my pouch would explode, the surgery I had in April I was so sick they wouldn't let me go home I wanted my DH to smother me,2 hrs later I was fine they I took Dilaudid again for pain & wanted to die again , and they gave me Zofran which is one of the best anti-nausea drugs out there & no help,I realized that it ws the Dilaudid. So when I had surgery 3 weeks ago I would not let them give me Dilaudid I told then I was allergic to it, in fact post-op I took nothing for pain I  had some discomfort but I would rather be in pain then have the dry heaves and all that nauseau this lasts surgery I had no problem so for me it means no Narcotics no nauseau

Thanks for this!  I have not gotten sick since RNY so I guess my concern is whether vomiting would mess up anything.  Good to know that it won't.

Again, thank you!!

I stess to the anaestesia doc I got really sick, and ask for a super duper ****tail of everything hes got for my iv, they do patches also, I have never been sick since I started asking and I did have wls and two rounds of plastics, the anaestesia is administed through an iv, so nothing goes into your stomach so you don't need to worry about that, and if you do dry heave it will probably be uncomfortable but not be any problem for your rny.  I had a neck lift and that surgery is painful, the stitches just about killed me around my ears.

Good Luck

Hugs to you as well!!!  If I look half as gorgeous as you, my surgery will be a great success!!!

Thanks so much for the info and support as it is so tremendously appreciated.

I did have a consult with the surgeon today and we spoke at length about the anesthesia and she has written in my chart already that I should be prescribed tons of different anti-nausea meds, so I am hoping that the nausea will not be a problem.

Seriously, while no one likes to be puking their brains out after surgery as it's absolutely no fun, my biggest concern was really whether or not I could do any damage, and the overall consensus seems to be that while it's no picnic it is not harmful.

Anyhow, I'm really leaning towards moving forward with the surgery...

I had my gall bladder out in March - laproscopically - and in the receovery room the nurse kept asking me "what is your pain 1-10" - I would say 7 (this is what the pre-op nurse told me to say - as 10 was child birth (I have never had children) - so I don't know.

The post-op nurse would give me a shot. This happened 2 or 3 times - they they gave me my clothes - had me get dressed & put me in a wheel chair & got me in the car.

On the way home I was sick. They had given me a plastic bag (thank GOD!)

Not sure if this was the anesthesia - or all the pain shots I got.

How do you judge your pain - vs the anesthesia??
