Plastic surgery residence programs?

I'm nowhere near ready for plastics yet as I'm only 5 months post-op VSG, but I can't stop thinking about it!  I just recently heard about the ps residence programs as a way of having ps at a more affordable cost.  I know about Dr. Sauceda & would consider him as well...the thought of being away for 2 weeks scares me, though, as I have 4 little kids (8,6,4,&2).  I went to MX for my VSG & was gone for 5 days...that was long enough then!

Anyone have experience with the plastic surgery residence program?  There are two hospitals about 1.5 hours away from me that are listed on the website.

The programs all vary significantly as to how theya re structured and supervised, and it's really the skill and experience of the supervising physician that determines the result.

So you will want to meet that doctor and get an idea of what you can expect.

On average, the fees at residency programs are reduced by 50%.

Dr. lomanaco is over the Baylor Residency Program. I would trust that. I checked into that quite a bit before settling on Sauceda. I think they are both great Dr.'s and I would have been in good hands with him.

Dr L is not over the Baylor PS program.  There are several PS doctors (6 I think) that are over various areas at Baylor.  I know Dr Jamal Bullocks is the attending surgeon who works with some PS residents and works with lots of WLS patients.  Dr L partners with Dr Bullocks on some cases which is what he did in my case.  You can go to Baylor and use the residency program without Dr L or you can choose to have Dr L assist Dr Bullocks and the Residents for your entire case.  Either way I believe they do outstanding work and the aftercare I received was great.  I'm scheduled for round 2 at Baylor in January.

Thank you for clarifying. I would have gone through Dr. Lo if I had gone.

Jenn.

I am currently a patient of the Residency Program at Mass General in Boston.  Im a nurse and had some hesitation going there, but basically when I realized that for most major hospitals, the residents are doing the surgeries with an attending experienced physician assisting them.  Most people do not realize it.

I have absolutely been thrilled with the care that Ive received thru the program.  It would be worth it to check out your local and extended hospitals within your state.  Ive saved literally thousands.  I had a lower face/neck lift before thanksgiving, and will have a TT/BL/BA Jan 5th.

Give it a shot.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

good luck

I had my extended abdominoplasty 6 weeks ago today at the University of Washington's Plastic Surgery Residency Center in Seattle.  My first consultation was with the resident and I felt completely comfortable right from the start with him.  I met the Chief Surgeon at my pre-op appointment and felt totally comfortable with him, too, so was glad I made this decision.  My resident is almost through the program - the week after my surgery he moved on to Children's Hospital to do 6 months of pediatric plastics and then will move to Chicago in June and be a surgeon at a private practice back there.  My surgery cost $3,450.

The Chief Surgeon said the same as the other poster - that they perform a lot of the surgeries and the residents assist them, but there are a lot of the surgeries that the Chief has the residents do themselves and he assists them.  After all - it's a residency program and they have to perform the procedures in order to complete their residencies and become full-fledged surgeons.  And the Chief Surgeon said "I wouldn't let a resident perform a procedure on a patient that I wouldn't be 110% comfortable letting the resident perform on me."  It's the surgeon and the hospital's butts on the line, too!

Highest 323 / Surgery Day 289 / Current 165 - RNY 10-27-07, Hit Goal 08-18-08. Tummy tuck 10-28-09 - UW Plastic Surgery Residency Ctr, Breast/Arm Lift w/Dr. Sepehr Egrari in Bellevue, WA on 5-22-13!
