MY SURGERY WAS CANCELLED!

Went to hospital 645 as ordered  met with surgeon  marked me up for a half hour  spiked the Clindiamycin antibiotic and wheeled into the OR  See the surgeon go in  they start to transfer me to the operating table and i start to cough uncontrollably, thats all I remember.. the anesthiaoligist (sp) stated to me she wasnt too concerned when i started to cough as she was preparing to intubate me but then i started wheezing and my o2 sat went from 100percent to 62 percent.. they said they had to ambu bag me and caused quite a commontion in the OR everyone acted very quickly and she said this was the best place to have this reaction  where all the drs were and great nurses  they took good care of me... i came too with my surgeon telling me i had a reaction to the antibiotic and they were stopping the procedure..t hey could have gone thru with it  but it was a safety reason  and all i did was cry uncontrollably..I waited my whole life for this  I was soooo disappointed..To make a long story short  my surgeron wanted me to get medical clearance from my pulmonary doc which took him 5 hours to arrive..so here i sit in the holding area waiting for doc.. got the medical clearance  perfect ekg  lung sounds clear..so now I have a NEW DAY   THE DAY AFT THANIKSGIVING.. i guess i should be thankful and I am.. I am happy to be alive.. Now my DD who lives in Az wants me to stop this  I said no she hung up on me.. my other daughter wants me to stop it too.. not going to happen..This was a fluke  a reaction to the medicine  thats all. So now I have another week of anticipation.. Thanks for listening..

OMigosh Natalie!!!  I'm so glad that all of the staff were so wonderful about handling this terrible reaction to antibiotics!!!!

How wonderful that you are just fine, and I'm so sorry you were disappointed about your surgery -- but your procedure is just waiting for you to be ready.  And you will be!!!

Natalie I am glad you are okay, but most of all I am glad this happened in the hospital around medical staff who knew how to help you.  I wish you the best of luck on your new surgery date.

I can SOOO relate!! I had a similar situation when I had my WLS. Went in for the lap band. Surgeon started only to find a hiatal hernia so severe there was no way I could have the band. Plus, the hernia would have to be repaired with a patch (pig skin,,,ewwwww) and not just a stitch or 2. Woke up to find I had not band and would have to re-evaluate. Went back 2 weeks later for my RNY and hernia repair. The disappointment I felt when I woke up was just tremendous!! However, I see now that things work their way out in the end, usually for the better!!

Oh Natalie I feel so bad for you.  I'm glad you had a "quick" reaction though so they caught the allergy before they got started.  Glad the tests were clear!  I like your attitude.  If the doc cleared you and they are comfortable with going ahead you should have no worries.  I understand that your daughters are concerned.  Maybe they could get some confirmation from the doc and feel better.  I hope they are supportive of you.  Enjoy your Thanksgiving and trust that all things happed for a reason!

Thanks Marilyn,   My DD is overreacting.. She does not understand the medical aspect of it all.. she wrote a horrible reply to my facebook regarding the company I keep  most of these ladies are Wls patients  who are well educated and well informed and nurses with whom I work with.. regarding there posting me well wishes and encouragment . Was not happy  removed the post and have not heard from her yet.  This is my life my journey and if this is how its supposed to be then so be it.. I have no doubt in my mind I am doing the right thing..  Thanks for letting me vent.
