compression garment VS binders

what is the difference between a compression garment and a Binder.  What should I be looking for?  I have surgery in December, having a lower body lift and upper thighs done.  six months after that I plan on having my upper back done.
Any advise would be welcomed.

The compression garment will have legs (ending either above the knee or below the knee depending on what your doctor says).  Stage 1 has side zippers (you wear this right after surgery usually), Stage 2 just pulls on (I never used the stage 2, I just keep using the original one).

The binder is a long piece of elastic with a Velcro fastener that gets stretched and wrap around your waist.
