Yes. I didn't specifically ask, but you do need a passport to go pretty much anywhere anymore, and since he's in Mexico, you do need to have one. I got mine a few years ago, but I think they are between $70-$100.

You can get passport information from the state department.

You can check online to see which post office in your area has a passport center.  They will have the applications for you.  They can also take your picture if you would like.  I took mine at Walgreens.  If this is a renewal for you, you just complete the application and mail it in with the money and your expired passport.  If it's your first one, you have to make an appt. at the passport center at your post office - they just check your id and birth certificate in person.  They will mail it for you.  You will have to pay the mailing fee to the center.

I just went to a post office that had a passport center and waited in line and took care of it all at once.  They even took my picture.  I just went online and made sure I had all the required information and even filled out the application as well.  I got it within 3 weeks.

You pretty much need a passport almost everywhere you travel these days, including Canada and Mexico, whether you travel by air, water or automobile.  You won't need one for travel within the U.S. and its territories.
