What did you take for pain after Surgery?

My dr. sent me home with pecocet 7.5-325 M Tab.  My bottle said to take 1-2 tablets every four to six hours for pain.  When I left the surgery center the following day, I don't remember much of what they said.  I did what my mom and husband said to do.  They told them to keep giving me 2 every 4-6 hours and not let it wear off because I would hurt.  At about 3 hours I started to hurt so at 4 hours out my DH would give me some.  I'm out and I called today for a refill.  He said I was taking way too many pills and that I couldn't have anymore.  WTH!  I was taking them as my bottle said to. (My surgeon's assistant prescribed my meds before surgery)   He wanted me to take Advil.  I haven't taken that since my RNY surgery.  He wants me taking 800 mg every 6 hours.   I'm not a pill taker anyway so I just wanted to know what you all did after your surgery.  I had Full TT, MR, BL, BA, Arm Lift and Lipo.  To me thats a lot of proceedures and I felt like I needed the meds or I wouldn't take them.   I'm feeling Ok and I haven't had the percoset since 10:30 this AM.  I have some valuim for the pain also.  I will try using that a little more.  I'm hoping he is right and I should be needing less by now.  I had my surgery Sept 3 so I'm a few days out now.  But to totally rely on Advil?
I just wanted your opinions????
Thanks!

Vkicodin.  Five and a half weeks out, I'm still taking it at night because when it's dakr and quiet, there's nothing to distract me from the pain.

I'm surprised your Dr. isn't allowing more relief of pain, frankly.  Does he have any reason to think you might be abusing it?

I don't do well with vicodin.  It causes me to be awake all the time and I can't rest.  Thats why I asked for something other then that.  I am only taking it as he prescribed on the bottle, I don't know why he would think I'm abusing it!  I'll Call my WLS tomorrow to see about the advil.  I advised my WLS I couldn't take Advil but he told me to call and see If it would be ok to take it for a week.

I had Darvocet an Valium. I was to take 1-2 darvocet every 4 -6 hours but not to exceed 8 pills in 24 hours. I took 1 darvocet every 6 hours for the first few days and then only at night to sleep at around 5 days post op. I was able to take a valium between the darvocet if the pain got too bad but really didn't  have to do that too much. Once I quit taking the darvocet everyday I would take tylenol as needed during the day.

I take dilaudid after my surgeries.  I usually do not have to take it very long.  You had a lot done -- and adequate pain management is part of your patients rights.  If the surgeon is not comfortable writing the script for another week of pain meds then ask for a referal to a pain doctor.  Did you remind your surgeon that you are not suppose to take NSAIDS due to your WLS?

Hi Kim,  I am glad you survived!!  I knew you would!!  Okay, you have a doctor (and there a lot out there like him, unfortunately) who does not want to give you a refill.  You know you can't take Advil, so your next step is to call your family doctor and explain the situation to them, tell them how many pills you were prescribed, and the directions, and all the procedures you had done.  There are many family docs who have no problem helping out in these situations, especially if you have a good relationship with them.  I will tell you this, plastic surgeons deal with a lot of basket-cases, who have a lot of procedures just for the pain meds, so that is where he is coming from (even though you aren't one of them).  Take care and keep us posted on your progress!!  BTW, I weighed 148 today!! I'm still losing!!

Hugs,
Marie

As a RNY you aren't supposed to take Advil.  Your PS should know that!  I took the same amount as you for the Percocet.  For the first 10 days after going home from the hospital I was taking percoset 2 every 4 hours.  If I needed anything additional I took tylenol.  My doc gave me a refill of percoset, which I continued but more like 1 every 6 hrs and then started tapering off until I was just taking one at night by the 5th and 6th week.  I used tylenol as needed.

I think it is completely unreasonable that he will not give you at least 1 refill.  I would be calling his office again.  I had LBL/TT/Butt Aug/Thigh Lift and Breast lift.  You seem to have close to the same.  Have your husband call, if necessary  You won't get addicted!  Just start tapering off, but they really help take the edge off.

In the meantime, take the tylenol and tylenol PM to help you sleep at night.

My surgen sent me home with some time released pain med and IBProfen 800s (he's german, it was the german thing to do) that did do CRAP for me - most likely because I didn't absorb it AT ALL. So I went to the American Army clinic, opened my binder, handed him my IBprofen pack and said they want me to take THIS for THIS - IT HURTS! HELP!. He did a couple WTF, WTH and shaking his head before calling the pharmacy to pack me a goodie bag of percs. (My fiance had 5 percs left over from surgery that I rationed to get me through Friday's release from the recovery center until monday when I went to the doc first thing). I took 1 perc every 6 hours and tried to space them during the day when it didn't hurt as bad. at 2.5 weeks post op I was down to tylenol and 1 perc at night. At 4 weeks out I was off percs totally. I'm not saying I was pain FREE, but it was pain management. If I didn't feel any pain, to me that's bad because how would I know if I over did or hurt something?

If I had taken 2 percs together (ever) I would have been OD'ing on phenergan (sp?) as I would be barfing from the nausea. Although the standard dosing instructions from the drug company for adults is 1-2 every 4-6 hrs, most docs tell you to take 1 every 4 hrs then space them to 1 every 4-6 hrs. Sounds like your doc just doesn't communicate well and is punishing you for him not being more clear - BOO on him!

I just went back to the surgeon and he told me to bring in the script from the American doc and he'd write my scripts for percs for my round two in December!  YEAH! Good drugs - FINALLY ! (if he hadn't, I wasn't going back to him - OUCH!)

Kim go to Walmart or Walgreens and get Percogesic. It is behind the counter and you have to ask for it here.  THE BEST thing I have ever used to not be a perscription .  Two will put you out like a light and I cant hold my eyes open so I take one .   RNY bypass people can take this PER MY DR..
I had never heard of it until someone told me too.    I never go without it now use it for ANY pain I may have all the time .
Hope it helps you ..  Just had arms done and after 5 days quit the pain meds and wen to this ..
IT works great

I'm allergic to percocet, so I was sent home with demerol. Instructions were to take 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours.

After a few days I was switched to Vicodin. I really don't have pain, just discomfort. I take Tylenol now.

I would question the Advil being an RNY patient.
